The UK is poised to soon launch a landmark trial of puberty blockers for transgender youth to “to find out how the [National Health Service] can best support children and young people with gender incongruence”. The trial has already been funded with public money and has now reportedly been submitted for ethics review.

Standard methodologies for counting the number and percentage of clinical trials that remain unreported may be overstating the scale of the problem, feedback from two medical research institutions suggests. In February 2024, TranspariMED and allied groups published a report claiming that 475 clinical trials involving 83,903 patients across five Nordic countries had never made their results public. The report was widely covered in national media in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

Dear Health Research Authority, 1. Please provide the dataset of all UK clinical trials that received REC ethics approval during the calendar year 2020 that was compiled as part of the HRA's #MakeItPublic workstream, including all data fields of that dataset (e.g. trial ID registration numbers). 2. Please provide the equivalent datasets for the calendar years 2021, 2022 and 2023 as separate files. Please provide the data above in .csv or .xlsx format.
