The roll call of great bands and artists to have emerged from the city's intimate venues is a matter of huge pride and eclipses that of places many times bigger. Radiohead, Supergrass, Ride, Foals, Stornoway, Swervedriver, The Dreaming Spires, Glass Animals.... the list goes on. But bands don't just appear by accident, they depend on a supportive ecosystem to thrive.

Formed in the heady days of the mid 1990s, Crashland were widely touted as Britain’s best new band. The indie-rockers had everything: killer songs, a compelling live energy, and a frontman in Alex Troup whose melodic instincts and lyrical heart made him one of the most quietly gifted songwriters of his generation. Alas, the band’s ascendance was cut short, with the lads missing out on a deal, disbanding and moving on to other things.

His comments sparked outrage in Oxfordshire where RAF Brize Norton was an important military base. The Oxford Mail went out to Afghanistan to follow troops from Oxfordshire on the front line.
