Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, it's where I learned to type, one of the most useful skills I gained in high school.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

With an invitation to come report on what I see with my own eyes. Or better yet, a way to become long-term partners in spreading the word.

Why did you become a journalist?

To follow my curiosity and find interesting answers I could share in illuminating ways.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Somewhere far away, in a place I've never seen before.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That travel writers are waiting to be "pitched" on ideas. Unless writing for trade mags, we thrive on discovery and first-person experience.
