Association Between Differential Heterogeneity of Antibiotics Consumption and Share of Resistant Pathogens and its Implication for Antibiotic Stewardship in a German Hospital Intensive Care Unit
Submitted: 27 October 2025 You are already at the latest version Background: The rapid rise in antimicrobial resistance has become one of the 10 most pressing health problems worldwide in recent years. Antimicrobial stewardship is a beacon of hope with regard to measures to combat resistance, but is currently still falling short of expectations. A better understanding of the dynamics of the interaction between antibiotic consumption and the emergence and spread of resistance is urgently needed.
Persistent mortality in critical COVID-19 ICU cases from wild-type to delta variant: A descriptive cohort study - Scientific Reports
Abstract The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to significant advancements in treatment and vaccination, contributing to a decline in overall COVID-19-related mortality. However, it remains unclear whether the mortality rate for critical cases treated on intensive care units has also decreased. This multicentric, multinational retrospective observational study analyzed 447 critically ill COVID-19 patients treated on ICUs across ten study centers in Germany and Austria.
The Actual Clinical Situation Ruthlessly Exposes the Challenge of Rational Care for Nosocomial Infections and Requires Even More Efforts for Satisfactory Antibiotic Stewardship
You are already at the latest version First steps toward harnessing the complex dynamics of antibiotic resistance are presented. To do this, we first shift down a gear and try to understand the actual driving dynamics behind the development of resistance in a specific clinical department.
An open-label, randomized controlled trial to assess a ketogenic diet in critically ill patients with sepsis
Editor’s summary Sepsis is characterized by immune dysregulation that may be worsened by metabolic dysfunction. A ketogenic diet may therefore be advantageous in the intensive care setting, where standard carbohydrate-based nutrition can worsen metabolic dysfunction. Here, Rahmel and colleagues conducted a single-center, open-label trial where 40 critically ill patients with sepsis were randomized to receive either a ketogenic diet or standard high-carbohydrate nutrition.

The aquaporin 5 -1364A/C promoter polymorphism impacts on resolution of acute kidney injury in pneumonia evoked ARDS
Abstract Background Aquaporin 5 (AQP5) expression impacts on cellular water transport, renal function but also on key mechanisms of inflammation and immune cell migration that prevail in sepsis and ARDS. Thus, the functionally relevant AQP5 -1364A/C promoter single nucleotide polymorphism could impact on the development and resolution of acute kidney injury (AKI).
Increased circulating microRNA-122 is a biomarker for discrimination and risk stratification in patients defined by sepsis-3 criteria
Sepsis is now operationally defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by an infection, identified by an acute change in SOFA-Score of at least two points, including clinical chemistry such as creatinine or bilirubin concentrations. However, little knowledge exists about organ-specific microRNAs as potentially new biomarkers.
