By Tim Ward As cyber threats grow more sophisticated, the financial sector’s greatest vulnerability may not be its technology, but the people sitting behind it. Financial institutions have invested heavily in cybersecurity infrastructure over the past decade. Firewalls, encryption, multi-factor authentication, and AI-powered threat detection have all become standard.

Genetic determinants of fatigue up to 2 years after radiotherapy in prostate cancer patients
|
Abstract Fatigue is a common symptom of cancer patients, which can impair quality of life even years after treatment. Watts Survey Reveals Low Homeowner Awareness of Backflow Prevention
Watts recently conducted a national survey of more than 1,000 single-family homeowners on public water systems to assess consumer awareness of backflow prevention. The results reveal a major knowledge gap, along with a clear opportunity for more public education. Two out of three homeowners reported they had never heard of a backflow preventer. Among those who were familiar with the term, most were unsure of its purpose or whether one was installed at their home.
Why does Scotland have so many castles?
Mature Flâneur in Scotland Conjure Scotland in your imagination and you will probably summon a lone bagpiper playing in a misty mountain valley, a ruined castle in the background. Indeed, ye canna whinge a cat in Scotland, without skelpting a castel. Myself and Teresa (my beloved spouse and favorite flâneuse) are thrilled to be back in Scotland after a year’s absence, and one of the first things we noticed as we drove from Glasgow through Argyll and into the Highlands is the abundance of castles.

You see it happening from the corner of your eye and intervene just before it’s too late, ready to offer a timely tap on the shoulder and guide them away from the risky action. AI and the Next Wave of Robocalls: Protecting Carriers and Consumers from Sophisticated Voice Fraud
By Tim Ward, Chief Strategy Officer, XConnect Robocalls are relentlessly targeting consumers and causing mistrust for the telecom industry as a whole. This is a problem that is accelerating as bad actors take advantage of generative Artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out more believable scams. According to Juniper Research, fraudsters’ ability to innovate robocalling methods will cause mobile users to lose $70 billion globally by 2027.

Is it time to drop the security awareness moniker and focus on building secure habits?
Guest blog by Tim Ward, CEO & Co-founder at ThinkCyber #techUKCyber2023 What better time than “Security Awareness Month” to explore the need for innovation in our approach to security awareness? And we could start with the name itself! For a start “awareness” feels too passive if we want, and need, staff to be the last line of defence. We don’t just want awareness. We want to embed secure behaviours. Ok, so some people call it “Security awareness and education”. But perhaps that isn’t much better.
Solve complex data challenges with CluedIn and Azure OpenAI
In this guest blog post, Tim Ward, CEO at CluedIn, discusses the benefit of combining graph databases with Microsoft Azure OpenAI and how CluedIn can enhance Azure OpenAI workflows. In the effort to consolidate data across the enterprise, we often run into situations where standard logic will not suffice. Take the example of splitting an employee’s full name into first and last names.
Community Voices: Drug dealers must be held accountable to combat fentanyl
Fentanyl is taking away promising young people’s lives. This powerful synthetic opioid is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Deaths continue to skyrocket, and children are the victims. This growing crisis demands immediate action by our leaders. The Legislature must hold those who sell this lethal drug that is poisoning our communities accountable. Fentanyl overdose is the leading cause of death among 18 to 45 year olds in the United States.

Watering down of investment zones is a missed opportunity
Jeremy Hunt’s autumn statement has rowed back on the encouraging proposals around investment zones that had been put forward under the previous prime minister. While little flesh had been put on the bones of Liz Truss’s investment zones policy, it nevertheless suggested that the Government was looking at ways to encourage new investment across the board in industrial and other areas.

Teresa, Queen of the Castle
"Be sure to see the Pillory. And the Cave behind the Castle. You won't find it on your own. Get someone to show you..." Teresa (my beloved spouse) had not heard her 88-year-old father this excited on the phone in some time. She and I were headed to the village where he was born, in the remote border town of Penha Garcia in the Portuguese mountains near Spain. José spent the first 10 years of his life there, from 1935-45.
Norway's Funniest Signposts
One of the quirks about Norwegians is that they are not very good at giving directions, generally speaking, and their signposts - or sometimes, lack of them - reflect this idiosyncrasy. It's as if they expect everyone to just kind of know what to do. I'm sure they all do know. For visitors, however, this can be perplexing. For example, most underground car tunnels have two lanes of traffic. But occasionally, you run into a one-lane tunnel.
When Vikings Built Churches
Norway's 1000-year-old stave churches are upside-down ships "King Olaf ruled Norway with a cross in one hand and a sword in the other.
Ten Weird Things about Norway
"So, how are you finding my weird country?" our Norwegian friend Roald asked when we met him five weeks ago in his far-northern hometown of Skøelv. Now, Teresa (my beloved wife) and I have been on the road in Norway for two whole months. We have driven from bottom to top, east to west. At last, I believe we can answer Roald's question: We are finding Norway weird indeed! Uniquely, delightfully, wonderfully weird.

Tim Ward on protecting schools: 'We must stop standing outside and listening to the screams'
As the days pass since the horrific incident in Uvalde, Texas, our communities are left asking “what can be done?” As we watch devastated families burying their precious children, we are consumed with finding the right answers, so no other child ever has to face a monster in their classroom again. This may be difficult to think about, but the harsh reality is laws alone cannot eliminate danger, but laws can be, and should be, a start.
A governor-elect has a transition team. What about their cabinet?
In this year’s elections, candidates in 36 states and three US territories are running to fill governor seats (Exhibit 1). The outcomes of those races will likely have a significant impact on the day-to-day lives of Americans, but the effectiveness of a state’s chief executive also hinges on others, especially the governor’s top team: cabinet officials and the chiefs of the state’s agencies and departments.
LETTERS | Msunduzi Mayor, do the honourable thing
LETTER: “Where is the honour?” asks Stephanie Saville in the Weekend Witness. READ: OPINION | Where is the honour? Perhaps she should read Mayor Mzi Thebolla’s explanation as to why the lights keep going out since nowhere in the piece does he do the honourable thing and put his hand up, as well as those of his predecessors, to say it is my fault — the fault of my party’s two decades of greed, incompetence and nepotism.
Tulare County District Attorney: Bring back truth in sentencing
Tim Ward, Guest Columnist Published 6:21 a.m. PT March 13, 2020 | Updated 9:48 a.m. PT March 13, 2020 Tim Ward (Photo: Tulare County District Attorney's Office) At the World Ag Expo this year, someone asked me if my office was located in the “Hall of Justice” and for a moment, my mind went to a DC Comics magazine because I had not heard anyone reference the Visalia Superior Courthouse as the ”Hall of Justice” in years.
Point of view: Keep religious bias out of the voting process
For years, it has been acceptable to have polling places in churches. For many rural areas, this is the best choice due to lack of options. For suburban areas, however, there are other options. Normally, the response I have received in raising this issue is that it's easier to keep things the way they are now. With a little research, I found my polling location is actually not in my district, which is a violation of the state law. Where we vote makes a difference.
Securing Behavioral Change: Concept to Reality
Many organizations deliver mandatory security awareness training to their staff on an annual basis. Solutions in the market to support this have tended to focus, almost exclusively, on ‘training’ users rather than actually changing their behavior.

No on Prop 57: The increasing burden of crime
Ninety nine police officers have lost their lives this year, 44 of them from gunfire. There has been a 78% increase in shooting deaths compared to last year and ambush style attacks have increased as well. In October alone, five officers have been killed, three here in California. The murderers of these police officers are exactly the types of criminals Proposition 57 seeks to release back into our communities. Who is going to interact with these criminals who benefit from an early release?

Victims of crime and California legislation
Remember the familiar quote; “Necessity is the mother of invention”? We see the truth in that saying in nearly every aspect of our lives; from the cell phones we use to the cars we drive. It is also indicative of the laws we pass as voters.
Four Mistakes Scientists Make When They Communicate
As communication experts, we have worked with conservation biologists for 15 years – with the Smith Fellows program, TNC, WWF, and at SCB's 2013 International Congress for Conservation Biology. We’ve noticed some common mistakes scientists make when they communicate. Here are the top four: 1. Speaking in terms of scientific accuracy is not convincing. The issue of “certainty” is a great example of this. Scientists are trained skeptics, so they back away from certainty.
Open Source versus the Enterprise Solution
Let me start by clarifying a few things: 1) I work for a CMS vendor, for an enterprise CMS. 2) I am also a big fan of open source. Yet, I am attempting to write this article with all bias aside; with all generalizations thrown out the window. Without feeling like I am trying to justify this article, I think it is also worth mentioning that the CMS vendor that I work for produces a product that I would avidly use even if I didn’t work for them.
