My grandfather, after being selected to head the Midnight Mine, spent much of his time talking people into buying shares in the company. That went on for over a decade, as it took that long to complete the nearly two-mile tunnel to its intended target, a known ore body in Little Annie Basin. As the son of a Colorado gold-rush father, he was filled with the passion for finding elusive underground treasures.

In part one, I presented my 8- to 12-year-old memories of Galena Street, finishing with Tomkin’s Hardware. The next building on that side of the street, then and now, is the Aspen Building. Since I lived across the street from the Aspen Building, I glimpsed it every time I looked out our living room windows in the Cowehoven Building. The stairway entry for the people who rented apartments was directly across the street. You could rent one for $75 a month, included utilities.

Willoughby Collection/Courtesy photo In 1957-60, there were fewer buildings, many empty lots and far fewer businesses downtown. The following is what was located on Galena Street — at the time, one of the two major business streets. Aspen’s north-south streets are short; Galena was only four and a half blocks long if you don’t count the uphill end where, at that time, the only building was a dairy.
