Letterboxd — Your life in film
I rented this in the hopes of a true crime-ish murder mystery, but got a bit spooked when I found it in the drama section of my local video store instead. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Tim Blake Nelson keeps his cards fairly close to his chest as to just what happened to who and how, so it is unmistakably a mystery narrative. However, it is such an everyday sort of mystery that it hardly feels like solving it is the point as we wind out way toward this terrible and sad conclusion.
Local View: Old newspaper building 'ill-suited' for Duluth students
Since the 2020-21 school year, students at the Area Learning Center in Duluth have been engaged in the process of permanent relocation. During their time at Historic Old Central High School, Area Learning Center students enjoyed an entire school space. They had a common meeting area, a full gymnasium, a cafeteria with comprehensive hot food service, a nurse’s office, and a park across the street. Students with special needs had two classrooms and private meeting spaces.

How Long Do Opened Condiments Actually Last?
Summer cookout season is in full swing, and there's still plenty of reasons to fire up the grill for some burgers and brats to celebrate the season and enjoy each other's company. As you gather your supplies together, you might find yourself digging through the back of the fridge trying to figure out whether you need to buy some barbecue sauce, or if you can skate by with that bottle you bought and opened last summer.

When was the last time you cleaned your smartphone? By Tim Nelson, CIO
We often talk about live animals, people and vehicles as being the highest risk for introducing disease to a farm operation. But what about smart phones as a fomite? Scientists at the University of Arizona found that smartphones had ten times more bacteria than most toilet seats.1 While many of the microorganisms on a smartphone are harmless, some can be pathogenic, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), E.

Striking autoworkers draw support from other unions in Plymouth
David Kirby, who has been working for auto maker Stellantis and its predecessors for 25 years, called out to his co-workers and others on the picket line in Plymouth on Tuesday morning: “When I say union, you say power. Union! Power! Union! Power!” Kirby, of Big Lake, Minn., was joined by his son, another striking auto worker, and about 100 other people — not just United Auto Workers members but also leaders and members from other unions in Minnesota.

A CaringBridge site set up for Travis Muller says he was helping clean out a grain bin on Sunday when he fell into the auger, crushing both of his legs. Bystanders freed him, but he had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital in New Ulm, Minn., for a blood transfusion and then to the Twin Cities for trauma care and surgery.
Oaks vs. squirrels: A battle is underway in some Minnesota trees, and it’s nuts Original
Ah, fall in Minnesota — when leaves flutter gently down and mark the coming change of seasons. Or, as is the case in parts of the state this year, when oak leaves and branches tumble to the ground in a frenzy of destruction. The culprit? Squirrels. This year is shaping up to be what’s known as a “mast year,” when oak trees, en masse, make an orchestrated bid for survival and grow oodles of acorns.

Air Force picks Twin Cities to base upgraded C-130 cargo planes
Minnesota’s Air National Guard has been selected to get the military’s newest cargo aircraft — an upgrade of the C-130, the U.S. Air Force said Thursday. The placement of new C-130J Super Hercules planes at the Twin Cities-based 133rd Airlift Wing is pending the completion of an environment assessment. The C-130J planes offer upgraded avionics, can carry more weight at nearly twice the speed, can use shorter runways and fly with fewer crew than the aging C-130H, the Air Force said.
Expert advice: What to do if your pet ingests marijuana
There has been a major uptick in calls to the Pet Poison Helpline — a 540 percent increase — across the country as marijuana has become legal in more and more states. The reason why is simple: As cannabis becomes more accessible to humans, it becomes more accessible to pets in homes. But what should you do if your pet accidentally swallows a gummy or steals some cannabis butter off the counter?

Gas prices still running high in Minnesota, but relief may be near
The average price of gas across Minnesota has continued to inch up this week, after a significant spike last Thursday and Friday. But there may be relief in the coming days. Gas prices at many stations in the Twin Cities, Duluth and other parts of the state jumped 30 to 40 cents late last week. As other stations have joined them in recent days, the average price of gas in Minnesota ticked up to a fraction below $4 a gallon as of Tuesday, according to AAA.

ATU Local 1005 said 94 percent of members voted in favor of authorizing a strike in balloting held Sunday and Monday.
Torrential rain sparks flash flooding overnight in parts of Duluth
Localized, torrential rain sparked flash flooding in parts of Duluth late Monday night, swamping streets and the Interstate 35 tunnels near the shore of Lake Superior. As Al Quie is laid to rest, another family remembers enduring bond of faith, friendship
Al Quie will be remembered at funeral services this weekend as a former governor, a longtime member of Congress — and above all, a statesman. But it was in his role as a church committeeman, a lifetime ago when he was a southern Minnesota dairy farmer, that he reached out to a stranger — and formed an unexpected family bond that endures to this day. In the 1950s, Mishael Hernandez was a son of Mexican immigrants in California, his dad a Methodist minister.

The Breezy Point Police Department said officers responded to a call for assistance at the Whitebirch resort complex along Whitebirch Drive, off County Road 11, just before 9 p.m. They found three people dead.
Four injured when tent catches fire in central Minnesota
Four people were burned, one of them seriously, in a tent fire in central Minnesota over the holiday weekend. The Wright County Sheriff’s Office said it happened just before 9 p.m. Sunday in the city of Maple Lake, Minn. Authorities said the four — two women and two girls — were in a tent outside a home on Ash Avenue South when it caught fire. The sheriff’s office reported that one of the women was working on an art project with a can of spray paint.
Minnesota students head back to school while much of the state sees sweltering heat
Hundreds of thousands of Minnesota students headed back to school on Tuesday amid a sweltering end to summer for much of the state. While some Minnesota districts start the school year in late August, many others still follow the traditional day-after-Labor Day schedule. But the wait didn’t equal any cooler conditions as students started classes, with temperatures forecast to reach the 90s across much of southern and eastern Minnesota.
Infrequently Asked Questions: What happens to the animals after the fair?
This question is probably infrequently asked because the answer is, in part, a bit morbid. But the Minnesota State Fair is, at its heart, an agricultural exhibition, and animals are a big part of that. MPR News reporter Tim Nelson set out to learn what happens to all of them after the fair. What happens to all of the animals at the State Fair the rest of the year? Well, like so many things at the State Fair, it's a complicated story.
Minnesota State Fair officials offer tips for beating potential record heat this weekend Original
ST. PAUL — Minnesota may be headed for one of the hottest days ever recorded during the run of the State Fair — and fair officials are warning people to be prepared for the heat this weekend. The National Weather Service forecast has the high temperature on Sunday approaching 100 degrees in the Twin Cities. Saturday and Monday are expected to see highs in the 90s, too. A triple-digit high temperature at the fair has only been recorded once — 104 degrees, back in 1931.

New State Fair CEO oversees her first Great Minnesota Get-Together
Renee Alexander has been to the Minnesota State Fair more times than she can remember as a visitor and employee, but last Thursday’s opening day marked her first as general manager. She is also the first woman in the top job. But truth be told: The State Fair didn’t want her, at first. In 1989, when she was heading into her senior year at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Alexander applied for a position in the fair’s sales department.
Space Tower grounded for the rest of this year’s Minnesota State Fair
The Minnesota State Fair’s historic Space Tower, soaring more than 300 feet above the eastern edge of the fairgrounds, won’t be taking any more fairgoers up for a ride this year. Fair spokesperson Christine Noonan said the family of Gretchen and Errol Kantor, which owns and operates the tower, reported that a key piece of electronic equipment has broken down. “The replacement part won’t get here before the end of the fair,” Noonan told MPR News.
Mobile restroom facility increases accessibility at Minnesota State Fair
It was a standing laugh line for Jerry Hammer, the now-retired general manager of the Minnesota State Fair. “You’re only as good as your bathrooms,” he’d muse about the Great Minnesota Get-Together. Well, the fair has upped its game this year. “Over the last few years, we’ve been hearing from more and more guests about the challenges of spending a full day out here at the State Fair if you need special restroom accommodations,” said Christine Noonan, marketing director for the fair.
As Minnesota State Fair attendance increases, so do transit and parking challenges
Before you can eat a pronto pup at the Minnesota State Fair, you have to get there first. But some fairgoers are having issues with public transportation, traffic and parking. Mike Nevala of White Bear Lake tried three State Fair park-and-rides on Monday and got shut out at each one. Nevala began his State Fair journey at a church lot not far from his house. “We got there and there was a big sign that said the parking lot was full,” he said. MPR News is supported by Members.
3M announces $6 billion deal to settle claims over earplugs
3M on Tuesday announced it has reached a $6 billion settlement over thousands of claims related to its Combat Arms earplugs, sold to the U.S. military for hearing protection. Plaintiffs said the earplugs did not provide the hearing protection 3M claimed when the company sold them to the military from 1999 to 2015. Hundreds of thousands of service members had filed lawsuits, claiming hearing loss and tinnitus after use of the earplugs.
Infrequently Asked Questions: Who owns the Minnesota State Fair and its buildings?
Welcome to State Fair season! We’re back with your favorite segment: Infrequently Asked Questions. He talked with All Things Considered host Tom Crann on Thursday about who exactly owns the fair. Who owns the fair and all the stuff in it?
How to stick to a budget at the Minnesota State Fair in 2023
Every year prices seem to creep up at the State Fair, from admission to your favorite food. For example in 2017 a bucket of Sweet Martha’s cookies was $16. Now it’s up to $19. Many think it’s worth the price. But what if you’re on a budget? Is there a way to have a cheaper day at the fair? MPR News reporter Nicole Ki wanted to find out. She joined guest host Tim Nelson to talk about what she learned. Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.

So when the camera outside is house pinged about 3 a.m. on Monday, he figured another neighborhood bruin was checking out his bird buffet. “I heard a noise about 3 a.m. and the Nest app on my phone said it saw a person in the back yard.

Minnesota State Fair will have more cops, cameras and horses Original
ST. PAUL — You’re probably going to notice more cops at the Minnesota State Fair this year. The police force is growing from 130 officers last year to 170 this year.
