Bernhard column: Porsche bows out in style in Bahrain
One of the most successful chapters in Porsche’s motorsport history came to an end last weekend in Bahrain. It was a weekend full of emotions because a lot of memories popped up from when the LMP1 project first started. It really fills me with pride to have been there from day one until the very last lap. It was a great relief to have taken both titles in Shanghai already as there was no championship pressure in our last race.
Bernhard column: Title celebrations on hold after Fuji washout
When it rains, it pours! The weather around Fuji is known to be quite unsettled during this time of the year and last weekend the heavens opened and it was chucking it down. Persistent rain, interruptions and neutralisations affected the race, and in the end it was decided by the red flag, sadly without the outcome we'd hoped for. The motorsport culture in Japan and the fans' expertise is amazing.
Bernhard column: Another win thanks to Porsche teamwork
The heat was well and truly on in Austin on the weekend - not only because of the scorching temperatures, but also the tight race on track. It was a very close battle with Toyota but thanks to a faultless performance of our cars and great teamwork we had the upper hand in the heat. For the first time this year, we no longer raced into the night at the Circuit of the Americas, which was a real shame because racing in the dark is always such a special atmosphere.
Austin WEC: Team orders dictate order of another Porsche 1-2
Bamber took the lead in the championship-leading #2 car with just eight minutes of the six-hour race to go, when Nick Tandy slowed and moved over in another display of team orders from Porsche in favour of its points-leading trio. Tandy, Neel Jani and Andre Lotterer had the edge on their team-mates around the Circuit of the Americas on a day that Toyota kept the German cars honest – at least for the opening half of the race.
Austin WEC: Toyota hits back to lead third practice
Sebastien Buemi went fastest in the #8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid during the one-hour Friday practice period with a 1m45.712s set during a qualification simulation. That put Toyota a tenth up on the best Porsche time of the weekend so far posted by Neel Jani when the German manufacturer undertook its practice qualifying runs during FP2 on Thursday. Porsche took second and third positions in the times during final practice.
Bernhard column: Sealing a Porsche hat-trick in Shanghai
To have won both championship titles in Shanghai is incredible. I am extremely proud of the Porsche LMP team and my teammates. It’s a great honour to have been involved in the Porsche LMP project from the very beginning. I did the roll out in Weissach in 2013 and the first tests - the difficult test and development phase afterwards really brought us all together as a team. To go on and win Le Mans and both championship titles three times can hardly be put into words.
Bernhard column: Repeating the success of Le Mans at home
The Nurburgring has a very special place in my heart and next to Le Mans my home race is the second highlight of the season for me. In the last two years we have had an incredible reception from the fans and this year I really enjoyed the atmosphere and racing in front of a huge crowd. Our family has always had a very close relation with the Nurburgring. I remember very well when I first came to the 'Ring when I was a little boy. My dad and I watched a VLN race and it was just amazing.
Nurburgring WEC: Toyota beats Porsche to pole
They combined to take the Japanese manufacturer's third pole of the year by just over a tenth from Porsche's new high-downforce version of the latest 919 Hybrid. Lopez was fastest after the first runs aboard the #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid on a 1m38.083s, which Kobayashi followed up on with a 1m38.153s. That gave them a 1m38.118s average and pole by just over a tenth of a second from Porsche drivers Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard.
Nurburgring WEC: Hartley leads Porsche 1-2 in second practice
Brendon Hartley topped the times in the best of the Porsche 919 Hybrids in the 90-minute session, which was interrupted by a short red-flag stoppage and light rain. His 1m38.663s put him nearly a second ahead of teammate Andre Lotterer, who ended up on a 1m39.629s. Top Toyota driver Anthony Davidson was just behind, falling less than two tenths short with a 1m39.773s. The sister Toyota car was further 1.8s in arrears in Kamui Kobayashi's hands.
Nurburgring WEC: Bernhard tops opening practice for Porsche
Timo Bernard set a 1m41.612s in the #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid with 20 minutes to go in the opening practice session for Sunday's fourth round of the World Endurance Championship. That put the Porsche a shade over two tenths up on the best of the Toyota TS050 Hybrids in which Sebastien Buemi posted a 1m41.816s right at the start of the 90-minute session. Neel Jani was less than a tenth behind in the second Porsche on a 1m41.896s, while Mike Conway took fourth in the final Toyota on 1m41.979s.

Bernhard column: How Porsche pulled off Le Mans comeback
On Saturday evening, three and a half hours into the race, when our car lost its front axle drive, it looked like it was game over. But a little under 21 hours later, I lifted the Le Mans winners' trophy for the second time in my career on the podium in front of a never-ending sea of fans, after a rollercoaster of a race. Everyone who’s been at Le Mans before, whether as part of a team or as a fan, knows that there is nothing quite like it.
Bernhard column: Porsche dominance in Mexico a big surprise
Our Porsche LMP1 team showed a very strong performance during the WEC race weekend in Mexico, taking another one-two finish. We didn’t expect to be that dominant compared to Toyota. The development guys in Weissach have done an amazing job preparing our 919 Hybrid the way the did after it was announced that the team will leave the LMP1 category at the end of the season.
Bernhard column: A strong dress rehearsal for Le Mans
It was great to be back on the famous ‘Ardennes rollercoaster’ last weekend in Spa. The track is only 200 kilometres away from my home and next to the Nurburgring - almost like a second home race for me. I first raced there in 1998 in the Formula Ford European Championship and finished sixth straight away. The track is natural and has a unique character, which is why I fell in love with it already back in 1998. I have also raced in the famous Spa 24 Hours three times.
Bernhard column: Giving Toyota a run for its money at Silverstone
A six-second gap to the winner after six hours of racing: the first race of the season in Silverstone was an exciting battle from start to finish. After the preparations in Weissach, the winter tests and the prologue at Monza, I was raring to finally start the season. We have a new teammate, Earl Bamber, in our car #2 this year. I have known Earl for quite a while now. Three years ago he was one of the drivers in my German Porsche Carrera Cup team; we won races together and led the championship.
Timo Bernhard: Sending Webber off on a high in Bahrain
Excitement, emotion and flat-out racing for six hours – you couldn’t have wished for a better season finale. The race in Bahrain was definitely a worthy end to an exciting year. The final race of the season is always special, but this year we knew it was going to be a highly emotional weekend. To share the car with Mark and Brendon over the last three years was a very special time and of course we wanted to get the best possible result to finish with.
Bahrain WEC: Porsche maintains advantage ahead of qualifying
It was Bernhard who set the fastest lap of the session, a 1m40.318s, at the very start, as all six LMP1 hybrid cars recorded their quickest times on their first flying laps before settling into long-run work. Second quickest was the best of the Audis, the #8 R18 e-tron quattro driven by Oliver Jarvis, who was 0.488s down on Bernhard in the #1 Porsche 919 Hybrid.
Timo Bernhard: The perfect race for Porsche in Shanghai
As we have already seen in the last few races, the field was extremely close together and especially Toyota didn’t make it easy for us in China. I enjoy the track in Shanghai, even though it isn’t an easy one to drive. The first corner doesn’t really float my boat: the snail-like right-hander seems endless, it's getting tighter all the time and it is slow. After that, the lap features very different cornering speeds.
Timo Bernhard: Fuji the best possible advert for WEC
The race at Mount Fuji was as tight as never before: six hours of flat out racing paired with great battles, especially in the last third of the race. It was great advertising for endurance racing not only on track but also away from it. To see the excitement of the Japanese fans is amazing, the whole weekend was well attended and like last year the grandstands were packed. To set the car up for the track has been a real challenge, which the team managed very well.
Timo Bernhard: A fantastic win in brutal conditions
It was literally a hot race in Texas – not only as far as the temperatures were concerned but also in terms of the battle with Audi during the 6 Hours of COTA. Our third win in a row was a great reward but also hard work. I always look forward to racing in the U.S. I spent quite a lot of my career there with Porsche, and had a lot of success in the American Le Mans Series.
Timo Bernhard: A triumphant debut for Porsche in Mexico
After the last race at the Nurburgring, everyone enjoyed the summer break and got some urgently needed R&R. I went away on holiday with my family for a couple of days, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a very welcome break, because once the season starts my schedule is filled up and leaves little time to spend with family and friends and to recharge the batteries. After a few weeks away from the cockpit I was looking forward to getting back to work.
Timo Bernhard: A vital victory for the #1 Porsche crew
Looking back at last weekend makes me really proud – not only because we won the race at the Nurburgring for the second time in a row but it also makes me proud of German motorsport. The Nurburgring is the ‘heart of German racing’. The fans live and breath motorsport and it was great to see how many of them follow the WEC and sportscar racing. To win on my ‘home track’ was incredibly special. I grew up not far from here and have been at the ’Ring from a young age.
Timo Bernhard: From delight to despair for the #1 Porsche crew
There couldn't be a better track to kick off the new FIA WEC season than Silverstone. The track is full of heritage and fun to drive, a historic circuit with a challenging layout, and the British crowd make it an amazing atmosphere whatever the weather. It's always exciting to get into a new racing car, but to have the #1 this year is even more special, and of course we want to defend our title.
Shanghai WEC: Porsche wins, Toyota keeps title race alive
Starting from pole, the #1 crew of Brendon Hartley, Mark Webber and Timo Bernhard were never truly challenged, the trio sealing victory by a minute and clinching Porsche the manufacturers' title to boot. But a fourth-place finish for the sister #2 car of Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb behind both Toyotas means that the #6 car of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Stephane Sarrazin head to Bahrain with an outside shot at the drivers' title.
