Abstract As permafrost in the Arctic thaws due to global warming, emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a powerful greenhouse gas, may rise—yet its dynamics in permafrost peatlands remain poorly understood. Here we present 1,487 chamber measurements of N2O fluxes collected over three snow-free seasons in a subarctic thawing permafrost peatland. Measurements were taken under both light (with sunlight) and dark (without sunlight) conditions.

Heat transport by molecular diffusion is driven by temperature gradients. Mass transport by molecular diffusion is driven by concentration gradients. For years environmental plant physiologists have worked with this knowledge. However, transport phenomena are more complex. Temperature gradients also drive mass transport, as shown theoretically by Enskog (1911) and experimentally by Chapman & Dootson (1917). This is known as thermodiffusion (or thermal diffusion, or the Soret effect in liquids).
