1 Introduction Appendicitis is one of the most common general surgical condition worldwide and remains a major source of morbidity and health care utilization [1, 2]. Approximately ⅓ of pediatric cases in the United States present with perforated appendicitis [3, 4], resulting in bacterial contamination of the peritoneal cavity and subsequent peritonitis.
