The most common of these is the coffee-ring, for which the formation mechanism was first elucidated around two decades ago. (1−3) The vast academic interest it stimulated continues to thrive today, and it is also directly relevant to producing functional devices and nanomaterials.

1 Introduction The bone-cartilage unit (BCU) is a critical component of diarthrodial joints, enabling pain-free movement and frictionless articulation.[1] Structural and mechanical deterioration in the BCU, often initiated through mechanical trauma, are believed to be critical factors in the progression of widespread musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis (OA),[2] which affects a significant and growing fraction of the global populace (>500 million people worldwide and increasing[3]).

Ask any true adventurer about the value of solitude in nature, and they’ll tell you there’s magic in the woods: a peace that can only be observed when no other humans are around. That same magic exists on a boat, a deep calm that can only be brought on by gazing out at the wide reaches of the Lake, wondering what mysteries (or monster bass) lie beneath the blue-green waters. But it’s not just what’s beneath the surface.
