President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned growing protests in Turkey days after the arrest of a key opposition figure. In a speech on Friday, Erdogan said his government would not "surrender" to "vandalism" or "street terror" ahead of more protests. "We will not accept the disruption of public order." On Wednesday, police detained Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, on charges of corruption and aiding terrorist groups, days before he was due to be selected as a presidential candidate.

Austrian police say more than 400 officers took part in the operation on Friday [Reuters] At least 15 people have been arrested in Austria and Slovakia accused of hate crimes aimed at the gay community, according to state police in southern Austria. Some 400 officers took part in raids on Friday morning on behalf of the Graz public prosecutors office.

Iceland’s minister for children has resigned after admitting she had a child with a teenager more than 30 years ago. Ásthildur Lóa Thórsdóttir said in a media interview she had first started a relationship when the boy was 15 years old, and she was a 22-year-old counsellor at a religious group which he attended. She then gave birth to his child when he was 16 years old and she was 23.
