Journal Review Mayor Todd Barton announced the addition of Abigail Campbell as the city’s new communications director. Job Hunting
Nick Hedrick | nhedrick@jrpress.com Lleyton Harris is the kind of worker labor-strapped manufacturers want to find: He’s eager to work. “I’ve been working 25 hours a week. I have bills to pay. I’d like to work 60 hours a week,” said Harris, who works at a local factory but has been searching for another manufacturing job. Harris was among job hunters who met with area employers Thursday at a job fair hosted by the City of Crawfordsville and the Mayor’s Countywide Workforce Roundtable.
Projects in works to fill rest of commerce park
Nick Hedrick | nhedrick@jrpress.com The COVID-19 pandemic has not stopped companies from wanting to bring jobs to Crawfordsville. Despite the economic concerns caused by the coronavirus, the city was on the radar of dozens of companies looking to expand their operations and officials are actively working on a “handful” of solid projects for the Crawfordsville Commerce Park.
Main Street a lifeline for downtown in 2020
Nick Hedrick | nhedrick@jrpress.com As she watered flowers along a virtually empty downtown street on a weekday morning in late April 2020, Sue Lucas paused to capture the scene. Restaurants had been closed to in-person dining and all non-essential workers had been ordered to stay at home as Indiana saw its first cases and deaths from COVID-19.

Officials: Help eliminate rumors
For the Journal Review Irresponsible rumors have become unnecessary distractions for officials working to prepare Montgomery County for the emerging COVID-19 disease. City of Crawfordsville and Montgomery County officials want to be clear: There are no imminent plans to control citizen movement or functions to the extreme degree that has been so inaccurately circulated in recent days.
HEALTH EMERGENCY DECLARED
Nick Hedrick | nhedrick@jrpress.com Montgomery County declared a public health emergency Monday as Indiana’s first coronavirus death was announced and restaurants and bars statewide were ordered closed to dine-in customers. No positive cases have been reported in Montgomery or Fountain counties, but tests have confirmed 24 COVID-19 illnesses in 13 other Indiana counties, according to the state health department.
Badass sci-fi novelist Ursula K. Le Guin also has a critic-approved album
Movie soundtracks are cool. Know what’s really cool? Book soundtracks. For great books, written by groundbreaking authors, who also participated in the making of the soundtracks, which are genuinely, truly great, and also, sounded like nothing you’ve ever heard before. And if you’ve never heard of such a thing, that’s because it rarely happens. Except: In 1985, science-fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin published a novel called Always Coming Home.

Take time to explore community treasure
It is often said that we tend to take for granted the amazing things that already surround us. I spend much time listening to our community and engaging our citizens in a conversation about what they would like to see in Crawfordsville. Of course, many of the things on that wish list have little to do with local government and much to do with private investment. If I could control the investment practices of private enterprise, you can be sure I would.
Mayor praises work during storm
I would like to take a moment to publically thank everyone for their hard work and patience during the recent winter storm. We faced snowfall and bitter cold temperatures like we hadn't faced in many years. Our community clearly pulled together, as it always does, in the face of adversity. It was impressive to watch the teamwork that occurred as we faced these deadly conditions. I especially want to thank our emergency responders, utility workers and street crews.
What can make our community great?
There are many factors affecting the success of a community. I believe that one of the most important factors is the willingness of citizens to become involved in the process of good government. Our community is certainly no different. We really heavily on citizens who care about their community to staff the many boards and commissions that comprise city government.
