Perez, Bennett join Catholic Charities Board of Directors
MADISON — Catholic Charities of Madison, the charitable arm of the Diocese of Madison, recently announced the appointment of Rosario “Rosie” Perez and Richard “Dick” Bennett to its board of directors. Perez serves as vice president of mission integration for the Wisconsin region of SSM Health, providing strategic direction on mission-related issues for the health care organization.
Take time to see and live the Divine Life
The Madison Diocesan Eucharistic Congress (September 29, 2023, to October 1, 2023, at St. John the Baptist Parish in Waunakee) will take time to help expose a truth that staggers the mind and melts the soul. We will find it in its Masses, talks, Confessions, workshops, procession, Adoration, and people — all that the weekend offers. The Congress won’t place the truth, neatly packaged, in our laps. The Holy Spirit will gradually unfold it within each soul.
Record demand at Dane County food pantries
Some of the largest pantries in Dane County say while demand is up, donations are down. Area food pantries are seeing record numbers with rising demand and inflation, and that has operational leaders worried about the immediate future. The newest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows prices in September hit another 40-year high. Rent is up by 7.2%, electricity prices are up 15.5%, health insurance is about 30% more expensive, and groceries are up 13%.
Being thankful
Gratitude is a certain indicator of spiritual health. A person living in a deep relationship with the Lord is profoundly aware of the mystery and wonder of existence, the grace of God’s love manifested in the varied and gifted details of life, and feels increasingly overwhelmed by the goodness of the divine abundance. I find myself asking the Lord less for favors in my prayer and simply thanking Him more for all that has already been given.
Be with Jesus at Madison’s Eucharistic Congress in 2023
Next year, from September 29 to October 1, the Diocese of Madison will hold its first Eucharistic Congress, hosted by St. John the Baptist Parish in Waunakee. It will gather people from throughout our diocese to encounter Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and to celebrate His redeeming presence. Then, we turn to the world as witnesses of Jesus’ Eucharistic love. You are invited! But exactly what is a Eucharistic Congress, and why hold it next year?
Now, more than ever, Catholics need to be for life - not just against abortion
MADISON — Here’s how the Catholic Church is already supporting women, families, and children — and how you can join our diocese’s latest effort: Walking with Moms in Need (WWMIN). For months, people on both sides of the abortion debate wondered if 2022 would be the year Roe v. Wade would be overturned. The May 3 leak related to the U.S. Supreme Court case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization suggested the answer might be “yes”.

Easter message from Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison
“The Resurrection”, tapestry — Flemish production, Brussels, workshop of Pieter van Aelst; design from the school of Raphael Sanzio — on display in the Vatican. “But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.” (John 16: 22). This promise of Jesus in His farewell discourse before His Passion and death is a remarkable moment of hope for the apostles and indeed for all of us. Yes, Jesus will suffer horrifying crucifixion and an early death.
