Virginia Tech announces largest donation ever; majority of $75 million to go to athletics

Virginia Tech will use a majority of its largest donation ever — $75 million — to try to keep pace in the changing college sports money race, the university announced Thursday. A portion of the unprecedented commitment, made anonymously by a four-generation Hokie family, will also go to the university’s Honors College, according to the announcement. The university did not disclose the specific funding split between athletics and the Honors College.

As the next Roanoke budget nears approval with job reductions proposed and projects being tossed aside, questions remain about millions in pandemic relief money and surplus school funds, which the city now controls. About $19 million in former school money is available — and the city may have millions in unspent pandemic relief funds to also allocate.

After Radford council’s approval of latest increases, what’s next?

With the most recent water, electric and real estate tax rate increases approved, the Radford City Council hopes its decisions will prevent a reversion to a neighboring county. The council on Tuesday reaffirmed an initial vote from April 21, agreeing to the 2026-27 increases: 2 cents on the real estate rate, from 82 cents to 84 cents per $100 of assessed value; 5% on electric bills; and $3 on each 1,000 gallons of water.
