Letter to the Editor: Who is responsible for QPS poor reading scores and wait-to-fail approach? – Muddy River News
A recent flurry of editorials has been written on the dire state of our students’ reading proficiency in Quincy Public Schools (QPS), which raises the question: Who should be held accountable for only 20 percent of our third-grade students meeting proficiency standards in reading? It is important to highlight that all parties involved are good people, yet this literacy crisis in our district is due to human failure. Someone must be held accountable for it.
Letter to the Editor: Is your child becoming a proficient reader in school? Statistics would say no – Muddy River News
Pre-pandemic 2019 Quincy Public Schools Illinois Report Card Data compiled by Wirepoints shows only 25.9 percent of third grade students met or exceeded grade level reading standards, while reading proficiency in Black students fell to only 3.1 percent. Updated Report Card data for 2021 shows further declines statewide. Unfortunately, this literacy tragedy is not unique to QPS but representative of a national problem.

Human Shields: The Public-Health War on Children
It is often quoted that “those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” The moral identity of a society is based not on what past atrocities it inflicted on its people, yet rather on what actions it takes to learn and prevent engaging in these actions again.
Ultima VI: The False Prophet (DOS)
Ultima VI: The False Prophet For other games in the series see Ultima. Ultima VI: The False Prophet is a top-down fantasy RPG by Origin Systems. It was the first Ultima to be primarily released on DOS instead of Apple, and the first to have wide support for various graphics and sound adapters. In the game, you again play as the Avatar. You are beckoned to Britannia through an unusual red moongate, only to find yourself the target of an assassination plot.
Todd Porter: Goodbye readers, thanks for the memories; it’s time to make new ones
Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Longtime Repository editor Todd Porter pens his final column for The Rep after 29 years. There is a certain irony in 29 years. That’s a long time to do the same job, and it is even longer when you start doing it at 19 years old. Literally, I have notebooks older than 19 years. I had notebooks older than our kids. At least I did — until last week. That is when I made my final trip into The Canton Repository and cleaned out my office.
Todd Porter: Canton Mayor Bernabei making city flexible to help bring back business
Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Saturday May 16, 2020 at 5:30 AM When Tom Bernabei turns 74 in July, the affable Canton mayor knows there will be plenty of summer left for people to keep coming back to downtown. Todd Porter: This reminds us of the time when ... we laughed more
Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Saturday Apr 11, 2020 at 6:01 AM Community leaders from around Stark County were asked if they could top Judge Frank Forchione’s response to what this time reminds them of, and here’s what they said. If you are still fortunate enough to be working, you’re probably doing it from home. And we all know working from home brings its advantages, the least of which is having a scale anywhere near a home-office.

Todd Porter: I see empty buildings, but I see the best is yet to come, too
Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Saturday Mar 28, 2020 at 6:02 AM This are different times with empty bars and restaurants and so many friends suffering. But there is something else to see as well ... hope. In a rare moment of levity Friday morning, the echoes of a man singing could be heard 10 floors up. Bee-bopping his way on 2nd Street between Market and Cleveland, he was singing loud and proud. Then a car backfired. He pretended to take cover behind a cement wall.

Todd Porter: Renters, know your rights vs. slumlords in Canton
Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Saturday Feb 29, 2020 at 6:01 AM The city of Canton is putting slumlords on notice and empowering renters. “People deserve a better place to live.” People in Canton are starting to take action against slumlords in the city. And they should. At the end of 2015, City Council voted to raise rental registration fees to $80 per year, per unit. The hike was significant, and the additional money was used to hire more code enforcement officers.

Todd Porter: Lots to worry about (but solutions exist)
Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Are there solutions to everything Todd Porter is worried about this week? I worry … the people doing the $21 million worth of renovations at McKinley Grand Hotel will forget to tear down the hopelessly faded banner the previous owner put up on the south side of the building. Can you imagine that’s the only way to honor a place with our 25th president’s name on it downtown?

Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Saturday Feb 8, 2020 at 5:31 AM A new bodega-style store is opening on Cleveland Avenue; readers share their thoughts about problems and solutions in Canton. Todd Porter CantonRep.com Special Projects Editor @toddporter Saturday Jan 18, 2020 at 8:20 AM This is a great weekend to count your blessings, thank someone who made a difference and find someone in whose life you can make a difference. If not for Keith Herring and Harry Infantiedes, I’m not certain where I would be, but I know it wouldn’t be where I am.
