What was your first job as a journalist?
I covered girls high school basketball for some of the smallest papers in the country.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Absolutely. In fact my typing teacher in high school gave me a pity grade so I didn't get kicked off the basketball team.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is news for sportswriters. Our readers are adept and crave up-to-the-minute news about their favorite topics.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Christopher Moore. His absurd style is genius and his wit unmatched.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's not exactly clearly defined what a journalist is today. Bloggers are journalists to me and should follow ethics and best practices.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Funny is tough as it requires context. For Colts fans we always loved as a great Peyton Manning reference.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I like to get nuggets and not be forced. Don't tell me the story but give me a lead. Let me discover the story.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I prefer to write offline to avoid distractions. I use Google News, Alerts and Twitter for breaking news.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter although I do nothing with other social networks.
Who do you wish followed you?
I don't pay attention to the number of followers or specifically who follows me. It's more of a community conversation and anyone is welcome.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I could!
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We didn't have a school newspaper. I wrote for local papers covering girls basketball in high school however.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
The next one. Always the next one. Writing is about growing.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write profusely, edit maniacally and find a good soundboard and editor to help guide you.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Before breakfast. After that it's crazy.
