Our November Children's Book of the Month: A Parent's Guide

A crushing personal loss has made her vulnerable and pessimistic, and these feelings are hardly improved when she becomes separated from her mum and dad in a blizzard. But a chance encounter with a snow leopard cub and a Mongolian boy with a head full of folklore and dreams kickstarts a remarkable quest; to find the magical land of Whisperfell and reunite Silver with his missing mother.

Why Trees by Hannah Gold: 9798217060887
“A brilliant, unexpected writer . . . Hannah Gold is giving the NYC creative class a treatment both brutal and tender in Why Trees, her genre-bending, almost irritatingly funny first collection of short stories . . . [as] if Tony Tulathimutte’s Rejection had a baby with Mary Gaitskill’s Bad Behavior.” —Lena Dunham “The gigawattage of Hannah Gold’s wit and intelligence could light up Manhattan—and in Why Trees they literally do.

On a first date, the ideal number of questions to ask in any given ten-minute period was fifteen. After fifteen questions the asker risked diminishing returns. A good rule of thumb was to ask two fewer questions per ten-minute period on each subsequent date. Wolfred had gotten this out of a book.
Book Review: ‘Palaver,’ by Bryan Washington
PALAVER, by Bryan Washington The title of Bryan Washington’s third novel, “Palaver,” has several possible meanings. A palaver could be a discussion between two people from different cultures. Or it could be idle chatter. Or misleading speech. What these definitions have in common is that they are all forms of imperfect communication. Imperfect communication is Washington’s specialty.

Why Trees, by Hannah Gold
A ten-minute coffee break was called on set, time Laura used to continue her keen, proprietary staking out of those lives she might still be permitted to lead, and those which were no longer possible. She saw the assistant in her puffer coat handing steaming coffees to the crew, indicating that filming would soon begin.

Every Kenneth Lonergan production is, at its center, a story of nihilism resisted or indulged. Usually the characters engaged in these struggles haven’t yet made it out of their twenties. In his breakout play, This Is Our Youth (1996), about newly minted high school graduates wallowing around the Upper West Side, nineteen-year-old Jessica Goldman flirts at once with her crush and with the void. The fact that people change, sometimes dramatically, as they age distresses her to no end.
‘Deviations and Catastrophes’ | Hannah Gold
Kathleen Alcott’s debut novel, The Dangers of Proximal Alphabets (2012), published when they were twenty-three, has an epigraph by Frank O’Hara: “If there is a/place further from me/I beg you do not go.” Those lines from “Morning” have continued to haunt all of Alcott’s fiction, much of which deals with loss. The central characters in The Dangers of Proximal Alphabets—two brothers, Jackson and James, and their childhood friend Ida—have each lost a parent, they a father and she a mother.
The Genius of Garth Greenwell
Can we count on you? In the coming election, the fate of our democracy and fundamental civil rights are on the ballot. The conservative architects of Project 2025 are scheming to institutionalize Donald Trump’s authoritarian vision across all levels of government if he should win. We’ve already seen events that fill us with both dread and cautious optimism—throughout it all, The Nation has been a bulwark against misinformation and an advocate for bold, principled perspectives.

Your Mind’s in the Hands of Everything
It is difficult to predict when one will spend the night at a hotel in Newark, let alone three, and uncommon to agree to such a scenario willingly. If you live there already, you stay home. If you’re there for a professional engagement, your boss made you go. If your flight has been canceled, you go there as a last resort. Whereas, though I felt compelled to be there, I couldn’t point to an authority outside of myself that had forced my hand. The room had been booked a week in advance.

Hannah Gold: Lou Reed Didn't Want to Be King
Hannah Gold There is something ridiculous and even a bit menacing about listening to a Lou Reed solo album while sitting shotgun on a drive up the coast of California along Highway 1 on a typically ideal day, as I did this summer. A sound could hardly be more at odds with its context: the fog lifted off the resplendent ocean waters just as Reed’s domestic violence rock opera Berlin (1973) came to its eighth track, “The Kids,” which features an extended interlude of children wailing.

Patricia Highsmith’s New York Years Original
The novel she actually published that comes closest to these fledgling ambitions (it’s also one in which, uncharacteristically, nobody is killed, and the only one that Highsmith drafted sections of in the first person) is her lesbian romance, “The Price of Salt.” In its opening pages, the nineteen-year-old Therese Belivet, seeking distraction at her job on the sales floor of the Frankenberg’s toy department, reads from the employee handbook about vacation benefits: “ ‘Twenty-five Yearers’ got...
Depth Chargers | Hannah Gold
Rereading Denis Johnson’s novels and stories in the years since his death it always surprises me how clear his voice comes through and how badly I needed it. It’s like shoving quarters into a payphone, or consulting a psychic. Many try to imitate him. But much like those who do pale impressions of J.D. Salinger’s Holden Caulfield or F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Nick Carraway, they miss the quivering sensitivities and ironies that make Johnson’s writing so devastating.
A Year in Reading: Hannah Gold
This is my year of reading organized roughly by author and not in any kind of chronological order. I chose the books that made the biggest impact on my own writing/life. For the sake of not having too much to write about I stuck to fiction and excluded books I wrote about elsewhere. I feel truly happy to have mostly published literary criticism this year, but I used to be an avid blogger and old habits die hard, hence The List.
Lucy Ives’s Twisting and Treacherous Update on the Adultery Plot
There’s a convenient marriage in “Life Is Everywhere” between content and form, but that’s where the happiness ends. Its books-within-books conceit is twisty and treacherous, and taken together its many stories read like an encyclopedia whose every entry is at its heart a story of intimate betrayal. Narratives of intractable family conflict abound, especially ones that involve adultery.
The Loud Parts | Harper's Magazine
Angie said through convoluted gasps brought on by racing Adderall thoughts that Saint died at his desk so Jean could get his job. Jean insisted between tangents of laughter that she didn’t find it the least bit funny and privately wondered why Angie always wore such itchy sweaters when she was prone to worry raw every sensitivity imaginable. Her companion looked as if she were made of gold and worshiping herself, the way she slipped her hands up and down her arms in a perfect, hungry rhythm.
4-Day Work Week Study Finds Employees Are More Productive
Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto Good news for everyone interested in spending less time working: The largest four-day-workweek study to date suggests that employees who work a shorter week are just as if not more productive than their five-day-a-week counterparts. The U.K. trial also found that four-day-week workers are more energized during their workdays, having used their extra day off to pursue hobbies and exercise and spend time with their families.
The Sea According to Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson was a passionate and poetic writer, but she was not a particularly subtle one. When she set out to write a book, it did not end until the mountains had crumpled into the sea, all organisms dead or alive had vanished therein, and the form of life itself on Earth had been radically altered. Before Carson wrote her most influential book, Silent Spring, she wrote three thrilling books on the ocean’s creative power over all of life’s forms, each of them ending just this way.
