When some farmers began planting soybeans before corn, neighbors looked at them funny. But after early-planted soybeans yielded well, more people took notice. Corn specialist Osler Ortez and soybean specialist Laura Lindsey, both with Ohio State University Extension, noticed, too. “We looked more closely by planting corn and soybeans on the same dates at different times during the planting season at three locations in Ohio,” Ortez explained.

What happens when it doesn’t rain for weeks, temperatures exceed 95 degrees F and the sun beats down constantly? Many farmers found out in 2012. Corn plants wither. Ron Mittler believes a recent discovery could lead to crops that tolerate multiple stresses better. Mittler, a distinguished professor at University of Missouri’s ag college, studied how plants respond to multiple stressors differently compared to individual stressors. “Crops often get hit by multiple stressors at once,” he said.
