Column: U.S. imperialism and Hawaii’s place in history
A yearlong exhibit provocatively titled “1898, Imperial Visions and Revisions,” opened Friday at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., with Hawai‘i as a major subject. Given the National Gallery’s prominence, the exhibit may further illuminate for Americans how and why the United States took over the Hawaiian islands. The invitation features William Cogswell’s portrait of Lili‘uokalani as queen of the nation-state of Hawai‘i.

The ‘Daddy of Baseball’Was an Immigrant fromCounty Clare
Although almost completely forgotten now, Ted Sullivan (1848 – 1929) was once among the best-known characters in baseball. He was called “The Daddy of Baseball” and “The Godfather of the National Game.” His story touches dozens of American cities, from Chicago to Washington D.C., Milwaukee, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Dallas, where he managed teams, started leagues, scouted players and charmed chamber of commerce executives anxious to put a team in their town.

Choosing the first-ever list of 50 Essential Hawai‘i Books wasn’t easy or for the faint-hearted. But there was a good reason to do it. Too many important titles were slipping away from us, obscured by the white noise of an increasingly digitized media existence and the closing of most of our Island bookstores in the past 15 years.
A civilized stroll: No need to miss manners when taking your dog for a walk
Walking the dog has to be one of life's greatest simple pleasures for both dog and owner. Sure, the die-hards walk their dogs all winter but let's face it—it's a lot easier to head out for a stroll once the temperature cracks 50 degrees. Aside from enjoying the warmer weather, you and your pooch can get a little exercise, explore new neighborhoods and meet others from your own species. Still, while its simplicity may be its biggest draw, a walk isn't something that should be taken lightly.

Ledbetter out as OPRF baseball coach
Chris Ledbetter's return as the head coach of the Oak Park and River Forest High School baseball team won't be happening after all. Ledbetter, who took a leave of absence last season, was slated to return to the Huskies this spring. However, the administration at OPRF made the decision that Joe Parenti will serve as the team's interim head coach, effective March 22. Parenti was the head coach in 2017as well when OPRF went 24-11 with a 13-5 record in the West Suburban Conference Silver Division.
