Lawmakers should expand access to pet telehealth
At the Rhode Island SPCA and Potter League for Animals, we see every day how deeply people love their pets and how strong the human-animal bond truly is. We also see the heartbreak families experience when they cannot access veterinary care for an animal they love. That is why we support legislation introduced by Sen. Brian Thompson and Rep.

A perpetual motion machine: The preserved digital scholarly record
Key points Digital preservation will never be a solved problem: it needs constant reinvention, and is going to become harder over time. Scholarship is changing and this is affecting what needs to be preserved and what preservation means to the future of knowledge discovery. The diversification of outputs means that knowledge exists in a network of contextual metadata, data, software, standards and publications—requiring multilateral management of this complex knowledge graph.
A perpetual motion machine: The preserved digital scholarly record
Context From June 2020 to February 2021, a consortium of 10 organisations undertook a large-scale study on open access journals across the world that are free for readers and authors, usually referred to as “OA diamond journals”. This study was commissioned by cOAlition S in order to gain a better understanding of the OA diamond landscape.
A theatre student’s journey in the year of 2020
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many theatre students have needed to adjust their way of learning and performing; EMU senior, Lindsey Brown, is one of them. Online classes and social distancing have been set into place to ensure the safety of students. This is a big change for Brown, who, as a theatre student, is used to being surrounded by people. Two classes that she found extra challenging to do in an online Zoom setting were Advanced Stage Make-Up and Shakespeare.
Review: Sam Smith will please their listeners with a new album full of passion.
Sam Smith (Smith goes by pronouns they/their) is back with their latest project “Love Goes” and Smith remains the passionate singer we’ve come to expect since their debut back in 2014. While this statement is true and ballads are still their best, Smith does try their hand at up-tempo tracks. This is evident on the second single “Diamonds” and “Another One.” The songs both start off slow and sweet and then the beat truly drops. It’s the perfect combination for Smith.
Review: Songstress Mariah Carey shows why she is a beloved diva on her latest project 'The Rarities'
Mariah Carey has been a major superstar for almost 30 years. Her latest release, “The Rarities” is a mix of never released songs that she recorded throughout her career and some live versions of songs that we already know and love. Carey has been one of my favorite singers for many years. Her vocal range, songwriting, and ability to express a wide range of emotions through her songs is why she’s one of the best in the music industry.
Review: Aloe Blacc releases an album that feels like the soundtrack to what it means to be human
Aloe Blacc is back with his new album “All Love Everything” and it’s full of songs that reflect the different seasons of your life. This album might feel like the soundtrack to a movie, but it might also just be the soundtrack to what it feels like to be human and experience the full range of emotions that comes with that- our shared human condition. This album celebrates that spirit, and helps uplift it.
Review: Carrie Underwood creates a contemplative Christmas album with "My Gift."
Carrie Underwood is bringing fans her first full-length Christmas album at a time when it’s uncertain just how people will be celebrating Christmas this year. This Christmas album is very traditional. It brings in a little bit of a country vibe, but not much. Underwood doesn’t sing about material things she wants for Christmas.
Review: The 55th ACM Awards delivered a show worthy of applause with no audience present
The 55th ACM Awards took place in three historic venues simultaneously in Nashville this year. Country stars performed to no audience in The Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman Auditorium, and The Bluebird Café. One may think that having no audience would make for a show that isn’t captivating, but this show was quite spectacular. Keith Urban was the host and he nailed it. His calm demeanor was perfect for a show during these times and for a show that didn’t require pepping up an audience.
Opinion: Netflix streaming "Sister, Sister" may keep some of your anxiety at bay
Every new semester brings stress, but this semester brings new meaning to the word stress. Classes have just begun, but I doubt I’m the only one feeling overwhelmed already. Uncertainty and change are anxiety’s best friends and though we may not be able to kick them to the curb totally, we may be able to find some form of relief. One such relief is laughter.
Review: My view on "The View"
“The View” is not a show geared towards the college age audience, but it also doesn’t have the same “stay-at-home mom” feel it did when it started in 1997. My hope is that college students will watch a few episodes and form their own view of whether they should be watching it or not. The show has become less fun and fluff and more political over the years.
Review: Country singer Mickey Guyton releases her timely new EP "Bridges."
Country singer Mickey Guyton has been on my playlist since the beginning of her career. She is back after five years since her last EP, “Mickey Guyton,” with the EP “Bridges.” This latest project from Guyton is a much-needed EP for not only the country music genre, but for the world at large. Four of the six songs on this project reflect the state of what’s going on in the news and in the world around us.
Review: "American Idol" and "The Voice" finales succeeded, but also lost the feeling of true joy.
Half of the fun of watching the finales of “American Idol” and “The Voice” is that they are a spectacle full of glamour and comradery. But since our country is in quarantine, these shows are being done from home. Even though the shows did the best they could do under the circumstances, I was left longing for the finales from seasons’ past. In a typical season of these shows we get to watch the contestants transform before our eyes into superstars.
Quarantine videos to check out from your favorite artists
1. Alicia Keys Alicia Keys has a knack for coming up with clever ways to change lyrics to songs to fit whatever is needed for that current occasion or time. She did it brilliantly when she changed the lyrics to Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” at the Grammys. Keys recently did a version of Flo Rida’s “My House” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to represent how we are all feeling right now in quarantine. “This song is dedicated to the moment,” Keys said before starting to sing the song.
Review: Carly Pearce proves she's here to stay with her latest self-titled album
Carly Pearce is back with her self-titled album and she really did her thing on this one! This album shows Pearce going through a range of emotions. She has songs that are flirty, songs that are romantic and songs that are absolutely heartbreaking. The second song on the album is “Call Me.” It’s a fun song with a nice blend of pop and country. “We can go downtown, we can stay out all night,” sings Pearce. “Turning the neon into morning light. Why would you stay home? No need to be lonely.
Review: Classic and glamorous looks dominated the Oscars
Unlike the Grammy Awards red carpet, the red carpet for the Oscars had many stand-out looks this year. There were countless great ensembles to choose from. Here are my Best Dressed Women: My first pick is Renee Zellweger in Armani. She looked like a classic movie star and had me captivated from the moment she stepped onto the red carpet. She won Best Actress for her role in "Judy,"and this is the kind of dress one should be wearing when they win an award.
Opinion: Four upcoming concerts to keep on your radar
Most concert tickets these days seem to go on sale far before the actual date of the concert. It’s already time to start planning the shows you may want to see once winter is over. Here are four upcoming Michigan shows that are worth checking out: The first is R&B singer Alicia Keys. She is coming Aug. 18, to the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights. Her current single is “Underdogs,” and it’s an incredible song.
Review: Michelle Obama's "Becoming" reminds us that life is about the journey
Michelle Obama turned 58 on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, which happens to be the day I’m writing this review. According to a recent 2019 Gallup poll, Obama is the “most admired woman” in the world. “Becoming” is a wonderful book that should be read by people from different age groups and backgrounds. This book is beautifully written and is filled with life lessons. Some parts are incredibly heavy and other parts are fun and light.
Opinion: Best dressed at the Grammy Awards - my favorite looks from music's biggest night
The 2020 Grammy Awards were held on Jan. 26 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The red carpet was truly a sight to see. Here are my picks for Best Dressed: Category: Individuals The first pick is Ariana Grande. She stunned in a Giambattista Valli gown. The gown looked like a fashion-forward Cinderella; the “Thank U Next” singer doesn’t need to lose her glass slippers and walk the red carpet with a man anytime soon.
"The Holiday" is a charming movie worth putting on anytime of the year
The holiday season may be over, but that doesn’t mean a person can’t still enjoy a classic holiday movie. My favorite movie of all-time happens to be “The Holiday.” The movie stars Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black. These characters are relatable and the casting was perfect. Cameron Diaz is not one of my favorite actresses, but I love her in this role. She is quirky, funny, and just trying to find herself after being a workaholic and going through a difficult break-up.
Review: Menzel lets her listeners know everyone is welcome "At The Table."
Idina Menzel is a gifted songstress who is well-respected in the world of theatre. This holiday season she has brought her fans a holiday album titled “Christmas: A Season of Love.” Menzel filled this album with a lot of flair and style. Her signature nasality and ability to belt the huge notes suits her well on this album. The album feels very classic and like your watching an old holiday movie. It also reminds me of shopping in a department store where it seems every song is sappy or overly peppy.
Review: Kelly Clarkson reigns queen of entertainment
Kelly Clarkson is taking over all things entertainment: She has her own talk show, she’s a coach on “The Voice” and she has her own Las Vegas residency starting next year. Clarkson’s talk show, “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” has just been renewed for a second season. It’s a fun show that captivates audiences. She interviews big-name celebrities like Garth Brooks and Chrissy Teigen and includes human-interest stories that are sure to pull at your heartstrings.
Review: Lady Antebellum is back with an album as beautiful as an ‘Ocean’
Lady Antebellum is back with their eighth album, “Ocean,” and it’s a collection of songs that are mostly ballads. The great part is that ballads are what this group does best. The group wanted this album to be titled “Ocean” because the members wanted to sing about the ups and downs of life as if a person were riding a wave. They also wanted listeners to pay close attention to the track “Ocean” because of Hillary Scott’s vocals.
Mariah Carey celebrates nostalgia with ‘Merry Christmas’ deluxe anniversary album
Mariah Carey, known for loving Christmas and nostalgia, released “Merry Christmas (Deluxe Anniversary Edition)” on Friday, Nov. 1 to commemorate her Christmas album from 25 years ago. Although it may feel a bit early for Christmas music, Carey reminds us of the joy that comes with the holiday season through her anniversary album. Her version of “Silent Night” is a new addition to her collection. The new song begins the album and starts with Carey’s usual runs and a gospel choir.
Opinion: Old Dominion delivers music to give your mind a break
Picture courtesy of band's Instagram. The third album, self-titled Old Dominion by country group Old Dominion is filled with upbeat songs that are perfect for going on a vacation. Even if you can’t physically travel anywhere right now, put this album on and take a break from all the stress that comes with being in the middle of the semester. “Make It Sweet” starts the album off as a fun, joyful song. Within seconds you’ll be transported to a place of peace and enjoyment.
Five female country music artists you should know
Being a woman in the county music industry is a difficult journey. They struggle to get airplay with so many men in heavy rotation. Many women in country music deserve more shine, so here are five acts that should be on your radar. The first act is Maddie and Tae. They are currently on tour with one of the biggest names in country music – Carrie Underwood. They just released the second part of their new EP, “Everywhere I’m Goin,” on Friday.
Opinion: The beloved Fantasia is back on her own terms
Among the other songs on Fantasia’s new album, “Sketchbook,“ the song “The Way!” is fitting for her seventh album because this is the first time she is doing things her own way and releasing an album on her own label, Rock Soul Inc. This jazz-inspired song happens to be one of the standout tracks, and it’s where we find Fantasia giving us a rare, stripped-down vocal performance.
Opinion: Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra are my favorite celebrity couple
Since I was in middle school, I have always loved entertainment and fashion. Currently, my favorite celebrity couple is Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra. They are one of the biggest couples in the entertainment industry right now and they always bring a smile to my face when I see them on magazine covers. There are so many negative news stories online and things in the world feel heavy. They are both very active on social media and it’s refreshing to see what they post.
3 key elements to have extraordinary leadership qualities
Extraordinary leadership is the key to success. Incredible communication is the key to awesome leadership. Think about any awesome pioneer in present day time: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr, and John F. Kennedy strike a chord promptly. They were intense pioneers since they could rouse individuals to tail them. It was their capacity to verbalize their vision that made them successful in accomplishing their objectives.
Veterans, smiles and a dog named Honor
In early January the VA Medical Center in Muskogee, Oklahoma, became a brighter, cheerier place with the arrival of its newest staff member. Her name is Honor, and she’s only 18-months-old. “Patients smile when they see her coming,” said 34-year-old Terri Woodworth, Honor’s co-worker. “All day long we make regular rounds to the chemo, palliative care and inpatient psych units.
Transgender Vets, the VA, and Respect
By Tom Cramer There are currently about 5,000 transgender Veterans receiving their healthcare from VA. “That is certainly an undercount because not all transgender Veterans want to identify themselves to their provider,” noted Dr. Michael Kauth, co-director of VA’s National LGBT Program (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender). Kauth is also a psychologist at the Houston VA and a professor in the Psychiatry Department at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
With VA's Help, Waco Veteran Gets a Second Chance
Thirty-year-old Stephen Jacinto survived two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq with barely a scratch. No small feat considering the countless hours he spent in the air, flying over hostile territory. “I was an engine mechanic for the AC-130 gunships,” said the Air Force Veteran. “They would fly me all over the place to fix these gunships when something happened to them, and all I would bring was my toolbox.

Strength in numbers: A new women's treatment program in Boston shows promise through camaraderie
At the Boston VA they’re trying something a little different to help women Veterans. It’s called togetherness. Lots of it. “We provide a place for them to come and be with other women who have been through similar experiences,” said Dr. Sharon Baker, a clinical psychologist who oversees the Women’s Integrated Treatment and Recovery Program at the Boston VA’s Brockton Campus. “They’re together all day. We have a full kitchen here, so they can all make their meals in there if they want to.
VA helping migraine sufferers with new treatment
We’ve all experienced a really bad headache at some point in our lives. But what if you were having a real head-splitter three or four times a week? The good folks at the Salisbury VA in North Carolina might have discovered a cure for all that pain. “One of my patients told me about this new device that was approved by the FDA in 2014,” said Dr. Alton Bryant, a neurologist at Salisbury. “I’ve been prescribing it for about six months now.
Nab'em with NIBIN: Ballistics Imaging Technology
n a quiet Dade County Florida neighborhood, a man and his son are murdered while they sleep. Their home is ransacked and robbed. When Miami-Dade police arrive at the scene, the killer is gone, but the cartridge casings from his .22-caliber weapon are not. They lie on the floor near the victims, and police carefully … Continue reading Nab’em with NIBIN: Ballistics Imaging Technology
