My View: New Bills stadium is a real masterpiece of planning and execution
I attended the Bills open practice in the new Highmark Stadium on the morning of Aug. 18. The tickets and parking were free and available to those without a PSL, or personal seat license. Tom Graham, of East Aurora, was lucky enough to see the new Bills stadium for free. kAm|2?J 72>:=:6D[ H9@ 4@F=5?’E 277@C5 2 !${ 2?5 D62D@?
My View: A legendary West Side Rowing Club coach is being honored
In 1958, as I had done the year before, I was the coxswain for the West Side Rowing Club’s senior lightweight eight and four, coached by Charlie Fontana, as we prepared for the U.S. Nationals and the Royal Canadian Henley regattas. Tom Graham, of East Aurora, is a former cox, oarsman and Timon rowing coach. kAm%96 4@I’D C246 C6DA@?D:3:=:E:6D :?4=F56 86EE:?8 J@FC H6:89E 5@H?[ DE66C:?8 E96 C24:?8 D96==[ 2?5 :?7@C>:?8 E96 C@H6CD − 9@H 72C E96J 92G6 8@?6[ @FC A@D:E:@?

My View: Thanks to Title IX, women are excelling in sports worldwide
There were no opportunities for high school girls in my sports of rowing and hockey – or in most other sports. In 1961, at Baker Victory, a co-ed high school, the only sport for girls was basketball. It was the same in much of the U.S. This resulted in few college scholarships for girls. Tom Graham, of East Aurora, pays tribute to what Title IX made possible. kAmx? `hdg[ H96? x 4@>A6E65 7@C E96 (6DE $:56 #@H:?8 r=F3[ E96C6 H6C6 ?@ H@>6? 4@>A6E:?8 2E E96 &]$] #@H:?8 }2E:@?2=D @C 2E E96 #@J2= r2?25:2?

My View: America once valued scientific research that saved lives. Are those days gone?
The America I knew and worked in, valued research, science, clinical studies and higher education. My first job as a programmer, in the early days of mainframe computers, was at the Roswell Park Cancer Center. I was employed by Health Research Inc., a division of Roswell, which was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, a part of the U.S. Health and Human Services department.

The Oluwole Phenomenon: From the Streets of Lagos to the Halls of Power
By Tom Graham. In the heart of Lagos Island lies a place that has transcended its physical boundaries to become a symbol — a metaphor — for deception institutionalized. Known simply as Oluwole, this enclave once bustled with the kind of clandestine activity that not only defined an era but quietly shaped the Nigeria we live in today. For those who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, the name Oluwole evokes more than a place.
What does an increasingly health-conscious consumer mean for the on-premise channel?
By Tom Graham, NIQ Tom Graham, NIQ’s BevAl Industry Insights Lead, examines the influence of emerging health-conscious consumer behaviours on the on-premise sector, and how brands are evolving their strategies to cater to this new, health-focused demographic. Health and wellness, mindfulness, moderation. The buzzwords of the hour in the alcohol industry.
My View: 'Boys in the Boat' brings back great rowing memories
“The Boys in the Boat” book and movie introduced many to the ultimate team sport of rowing. In rowing, there are no numbers on the back of the uniforms and no MVPs. Each oarsman has to row in precise synchronization, following the stroke person who sets the stroke rate, while enduring intense pain during a race. Rowing is an endurance sport that requires all oarsmen to commit to intense training and be in superb condition. There are no shortcuts to winning races.
Biodiversity Net-gain - An Introduction For Landowners
SS Stephen Scown More Stephen Scown To secure planning permission, new developments must demonstrate a 10% increase in biodiversity, often requiring off-site enhancements. This creates opportunities for landowners to generate revenue by selling biodiversity units, though long-term costs and market risks need careful consideration. UK Environment
My View: Walking the Normandy beaches and seeing the cemetery are solemn experiences
Five years ago, I went to Normandy, France to see the site of the June 6, 1944 D-Day allied invasion. The invasion of Normandy marked the beginning of the end of Nazi control of Europe in World War II. One hundred and fifty six thousand American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the German heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region.
Biodiversity net-gain – an introduction for landowners - Stephens Scown
To secure planning permission, all new developments must be able to demonstrate a 10% increase (“net-gain”) in biodiversity. An ecologist will calculate (using a model produced by Defra/Natural England) the existing biodiversity value of the potential development site. The developer must then submit a plan to the local authority showing how it will deliver 110% of that biodiversity value after the development is completed, and maintain that biodiversity for a period of at least 30 years.
My View: The odds overcome by great athletes are unimaginable
What motivates endurance athletes? What compels rowers, long-distance runners and swimmers to the daily, grueling, year-round training to win a gold medal or set a world record? Is there a common trait that endurance athletes have to make an Olympic team or achieve a lifelong goal? In her memoir “Bravey,” professional runner Alexi Pappas, describes her grueling, 100 miles per week training for the 10,000-meter race for Greece in the 2016 Olympic Games.
Air quality and the planning process
By Tom Graham, a barrister specialising in town and country planning, environmental law and highway law. Tom has written a number of books in the topic areas and lectures extensively. In essence the planning process devolves into the following: • Legislation • National Planning Policies • Local Planning Policies • Development control (i.e. individual planning applications). It is fair to say that air pollution is a material consideration at all of these levels.

My View: The rowing experience can have its share of humorous blunders, but grit is a constant
Facebook Twitter WhatsApp SMS Email Print Save As a former coxswain, oarsman and rowing coach, I have seen my share of humorous blunders on the water. The pole vault: As a cox practicing for West Side Rowing Club, on a brilliant sunny evening, my senior crew observed a junior heavy eight-man crew on the Black Rock Channel rowing at full pressure. The channel has large, stationary steel buoys for navigation safety.

My View: America's greatness is its diversity
The following is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me; I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” In 2015, GOP candidate Trump said, “The Mexican government is forcing their most unwanted people into the U.S.” In January 2018, President Trump called for more immigrants from places like Norway.
My View: Great teamwork can accomplish anything
Rowing is the ultimate team sport. It requires superb aerobic conditioning. Each oarsman must be in precise synchronization with the person in the stroke seat during a race while enduring extreme physical pain. During my years at the West Side Rowing Club (WSRC), I remember the following teamwork question: “Are you pulling your own weight?” An oarsman weighing 180 pounds is expected to provide more power each stroke than a teammate who weighs 160.
My View: Honoring three women who helped and influenced so many others
I have volunteered in three different non-profit organizations led by visionary women, all committed for the long-term to help children and families in Buffalo and Lackawanna. Their respective organizations provided assistance for life’s basics – food, housing and education – while revitalizing neighborhoods. These charismatic women have inspired many volunteers to commit to community service.
Amazing technical skills and artistry are needed for movie soundtracks
My son majored in sound recording technology at SUNY Fredonia and has worked on dozens of movies in Los Angeles. I joined him at Fox Studios for the recording of the music for the original animated "Ice Age" movie. The goal, for this specific session, was to record the music cues for the film's big finale. The music composer conducted 100 top professional musicians at the famed Newman Scoring Stage, known for its superior acoustics.
European cathedrals are inspiring architectural masterpieces
It is hard to comprehend how they built European Gothic cathedrals in the middle ages without modern tools and equipment. Cities sometimes took 100 years to build cathedrals made of stone and taller than the pyramids of Egypt. External central cathedral towers rising as high as 450 feet with uninterrupted interior spaces of 130 to 160 feet from floor to ceiling overwhelm modern visitors, much as they did medieval worshipers centuries ago.
Describing the Indescribable - The Wisdom Experience
Zen and Psychotherapy This book is an intimate dialogue that examines the interplay of emotional and spiritual development through the lens of Zen Buddhism and psychotherapy. Zen and Psychotherapy artfully illuminates the intrinsic connections between the two practices, and demonstrates how the traditions can be complementary in helping to live a truly fulfilled and contented life.
Brothers in arms are linked for eternity
By Tom Graham World War II soldiers are still being interred with their comrades in arms in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Normandy, France. My son recently visited the USS Arizona Memorial, at Pearl Harbor, the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and marines killed on USS Arizona during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. A total of 334 crew members survived the USS Arizona sinking. Some of them have chosen to be interred on the USS Arizona upon their death.
My View: Visit to Anne Frank House an emotional experience
By Tom Graham In planning a recent trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands, I felt compelled to go to the Anne Frank House. Anne Frank was the German-born diarist and World War II Holocaust victim whose work, "The Diary of a Young Girl," has been translated into 67 languages, and is second to the Bible as the most read nonfiction book in history.

Traffic jam the result of man-made bottlenecks in Sedona
For the past several months, the No. 1 topic of conversation in the Village is the traffic congestion on SR 179 and 89A, originating at the double-roundabouts at the “Y." Many have commented that they now do not drive on 179 or 89A to Sedona for fear of being caught up in a 45-60 minute traffic jam in the northbound lane of each highway. At the May meeting, the Big Park Council members civilly discussed this issue for about 30-40 minutes.
