Waking the giant: 10 years since the most terrifying hallway in horror
Tom Heath · Follow 10 min read · -- Take yourself back to 2014, any Silent Hill fan back then had lost all hope of ever seeing another successful sequel — and fans of interactive digital media of all kinds worldwide were attending Gamescon. This is where they happened to play a freely downloadable demo called ‘PT’ by an unknown company called ‘7780s’ studios.
Which floor treatment is right for your shop?
[Editor's Note: This article originally appeared in the June 2009 issue of Grassroots Motorsports.] Story by Tom Heath Talk about the bedrock of human society: Concrete is the material behind such significant architectural benchmarks as the Roman Colosseum, the Hoover Dam and Alcatraz. This simple blend of sand, gravel and cement has been with us since at least 5600 B.C., with a few ingredients mixed in along the way for added strength and durability.
Faster autocross times? There's a driving school for that.
[Editor's Note: This article originally appeared in the November 2008 issue of Grassroots Motorsports] Story by David S. Wallens and Tom Heath On the surface, autocross looks so easy. All you have to do is drive through the cones quicker than anyone else. In reality, there are so many subtle nuances that it can take years to figure out the sport’s finer points. If only there were a way to speed up the process.

PAX Aus: Making cinematic trailers with Plastic Wax
First impressions can be tough, and in the AAA games industry, a game’s first impression is often its cinematic trailer. When a title is revealed in its early development stages, or it just isn’t ready enough to show live gameplay, a cinematic can convey the game’s concept in a flashy extravaganza in order to start the hype-train. Say what you will about the effect of hype in the industry, but taken on their own, cinematic trailers can be amazing pieces of film-making.
Grassroots Motorsports reviews Forza Motorsport 4
Story By Tom Heath Despite the growing number of enthusiasts and racers that cite racing simulators as a training tool for racecraft and track familiarization, the argument persists that a home entertainment system can’t reproduce that seat-of-the-pants feel of driving. This criticism may ultimately be true, but 21st-century software has come a long way toward delivering the thrill and excitement of racing to living rooms and man-caves around the world.
More Cars You Must Drive
Sometimes the whole story simply won’t fit in the magazine. We couldn’t leave these cars out of the conversation, however, so we’ve posted this addendum to the print article just for our online users. Here are 15 more cars you must drive. Jaguar did for the high end what MG did for the masses. Sure, there were a few Ferraris and other super-rare, super-expensive cars by 1948, the XK120 Jaguar could be called the first mass-produced supercar.
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR Review
10/9/08 12:07 a.m. I recently traded my IX in on a X. My IX's job was strictly track, and that's what I had intended for the X. That is before driving it. I was so (pleasantly) surprised by how much better the X was to drive on the street than the IX, my entire plan was turned upside down. The X is much more stable, less noisy, and MUCH more comfortable than my IX was. A little before I got it home, I actually turned on the radio, and pre-set my stations.
2008 Mazda Mazdaspeed3 Review
Better than: Caliber SRT-4 But not as good as: WRX STI GRM Bang For The Buck Index: 94.88 The days of simply adding forced induction to a good car in an attempt to develop a great car are behind us. Thankfully, the engineers at Mazda have been aware of this. When it came time to develop a sporting variant of the highly capable Mazda 3, they didn’t cut corners on chassis development, suspension tuning or interior amenities along the way.
2008 BMW M3 Coupe and Sedan Review
Better than: E36 M3 But not as good as: a real unicorn GRM Bang For The Buck Index: 84.98 What's not to like about the very latest chassis from BMW filled with rompin', stompin' V8 goodness? We've already been hugely impressed with its little sister--the 335i--so when the M3 came to the office we were all eager to have a turn with it. Color us lucky, since we were able to test both the Coupe and Sedan forms.
2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V10 TDI Twin Turbo Review
Better than: its curb weight would suggest. But not as good as: its price tag would suggest. GRM Bang For The Buck Index: 25.20 As a full-sized SUV with a full-sized price tag, it would be easy for a sports car enthusiast to dismiss the Touareg 2 as an example of everything that's wrong with the new vehicle market today. After taking this 5800 pound freight train around the block, however, it was our preconceptions that were dismissed.
2008 Saturn Sky Redline Review
Better than: a Sky with no turbocharger But not as good as: a Sky with a turbocharger and a clutch pedal. GRM Bang For The Buck Index: 81.70 For a car that’s only been in production a few years, the Saturn Sky (and its kissing cousin the Solstice) has infiltrated the sports car market with surprising efficiency. A market that was once all but sewn up by Mazda has been cut open again by The General’s duo of entry-level roadsters.
2008 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe Review
Better than: the 2007 Corvette Coupe (you wouldn't believe the difference that 30 horsepower can make!) But not as good as: the C6 Z06 (you wouldn't believe the difference that 70 horsepower can make!) GRM Bang For The Buck Index: 88.92 Looking at the 2008 Corvette lineup, it can be easy to get awestruck by the 505 horsepower Z06 model.
