Making a Difference Together
As the year winds down and I prepare to pass the gavel to our next president, Bill Brown, I want to take this moment to say thank you. When I announced our theme for 2016, the concept of “. . . And Then Some”—always going that extra mile for our families, our communities, our associations, our industry, and the clients we serve—I hoped the REALTOR® family would embrace this philosophy. However, you all haven’t just embraced it; you’ve embodied it.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words
We’re in the thick of the U.S. election cycle—a season that’s proven unpredictable and rollicking, and I’m referring not just to the national election but to state and local contests as well. Changing the Game
Traveling home from an industry event recently, I had the pleasure of sitting beside a graduate student from China attending a university in the U.S. On most flights, I try to avoid small talk—I’m usually busy catching up on office work or, sometimes, catching up on sleep. But when I noticed my neighbor using his smartphone to search through property listings in my Florida market, of course my interest was piqued. After all, I’m a REALTOR®.

Watching Our Demographics
When I was a senior at Bucknell University in 1978, my mother pleaded with me to attend a career fair. Concerned I’d graduate from college and begin working full time at the Berg Agency, the real estate company where my father was a regional manager and my uncle was president, my mother advised, “Tommy, you don’t want to end up like your father working crazy real estate hours all your life.” Nine out of 10 times I followed my mother’s advice. After all, moms know best, especially Italian moms.

A Home Away From Home
The future of our industry—and in some ways the future of our country—depends on what happens between 3 and 7 p.m. each weekday, because that’s when many kids come home from school to an empty house.
