The Work-from-home Wage Premium
Using administrative data from France, we document that within the same detailed occupation, industry, and commuting zone, workers who work from home earn on average 12% higher hourly wages than fully on-site workers. Approximately half of this wage premium is accounted for by observable worker characteristics (such as education, gender, and age) and firm characteristics (such as size and productivity).
Oberbürgermeister Schwerin: Badenschier kündigt Rücktritt an

R.I.P., DMOZ In 2017, DMOZ – The Open Directory Project that used human editors to organize websites — announced it was closing as of March 14. By this time, DMOZ had been mostly forgotten as a resource. Perhaps the biggest surprise was that it took so long. DMOZ was born in June 1998 as “GnuHoo,” then quickly changed to “NewHoo,” a rival to the Yahoo Directory at the time. It was acquired by Netscape in November 1998 and renamed the Netscape Open Directory.

Google releases URL Inspection Tool API In 2022, Google released a new API under the Search Console APIs for the URL Inspection Tool. The new URL Inspection API let you programmatically access the data and reporting you’d get from the URL Inspection Tool but through software. Google’s URL Inspection Tool API had a limit of 2,000 queries per day and 600 queries per minute.
Black Hills Energy request makes renewables energy systems less affordable
I am against BHE’s proposal to make it less affordable for residential customers to install renewables energy systems. If it’s true that customers with these systems aren’t paying what BHE considers to be a fair share of fixed costs, so be it. I wouldn’t disagree that some of the folks installing these systems could afford to pay more. But the rub is that other folks who would struggle to be able to install a system will be priced out with this proposal and that’s just not good policy.
The Financial Transmission of Housing Booms: Evidence from Spain
Abstract How does a housing boom affect credit to non-housing firms? Using bank, firm and loan-level micro-data, we show that the Spanish housing boom reduced non-housing credit growth during its first years, but stimulated it later on. These patterns can be rationalized by financial constraints for banks. Constrained banks initially accommodated higher housing credit demand by reducing non-housing credit. Eventually, however, the housing boom increased bank net worth and expanded credit supply.
The IT revolution and southern Europe's two lost decades
Productivity growth in southern Europe has been lower than in other developed countries. The column argues that this has in large part been caused by slow adoption of information technology, compounded by inefficient management. Without improvements in management practices, increased IT spending will not close the productivity gap. Since the middle of the 1990s productivity growth in southern Europe has been much lower than in other developed countries.
The financial transmission of housing bubbles
The financial transmission of housing bubbles: Evidence from Spain Housing bubbles may crowd out credit from other sectors, but they may also have a crowding-in effect by providing collateral to real estate-owning firms or generating attractive assets which banks can securitise and use to increase their credit supply. This column applies data from the Spanish housing bubble to a simple model of a closed economy to show that both effects were present.
From the archives: Death in a public place -- the killing of Matt Flores
This story was published in the Mercury News' West magazine in March 1996, two years after Matt Flores' death. THE PARKING LOT outside Building 12 of Applied Materials Inc. is not a place that catches the eye. The spindly young trees are Silicon Valley standard issue, the sparse signs and logos well in keeping with the corporate blandness that covers the area's technology parks like camouflage.
2015 SEO Not A Playbook: The Half-Decade Edition
Search engine optimization shifted dramatically during the first half of this decade. I wonder how it will evolve? Google has always been smart. When it launched, the PageRank algorithm changed everything, so much so that Google devoured a diverse community of now all but forgotten search engines. As smart as the early Google was, the pre-Caffeine Google was a shadow of this decade’s version.
Pound Wise, Penny Foolish SEO (And Content Marketing)
Is your marketing pound wise and penny foolish? What do I mean, and how does this impact search engine optimization (SEO)? Getting in front of decision makers and their influencers is difficult. That is why each year, companies that sell big-ticket items enthusiastically commit large chunks of money to purchase email lists, sponsor webinars and push out press releases. They exhibit at conferences where they hand out professionally designed and printed brochures.
2014 SEO Playbook: On-Page Factors
Welcome to part 2 of my annual SEO playbook. (Click here for part 1.) I have to thank Danny Sullivan and the Search Engine Land team for giving me the perfect outline for the 2014 playbook, the Periodic Table of SEO Success Factors. Part 2 will cover on-page factors, including content, HTML and architecture. You’ll find more than enough food for thought and some very actionable steps. This is not a step-by-step SEO guide, and it’s pretty informal.
