A University of Richmond first: Leadership studies professor’s daughter joins Jepson School
On Nov. 4, Ella Shields will become the first child of a leadership studies professor to join the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. She will be inducted, along with 94 other sophomores and four juniors, during the school's annual Prelude ceremony. In many ways, joining the school will feel like a homecoming to the daughter of long-time Jepson professor Tom Shields. “I grew up in Jepson,” the sophomore said. “As a kid, I sometimes sat in the back of Dad’s classes drawing pictures.
Not Every AI Workload Needs a Passport
Not every workload carries the same risk. A customer-facing chatbot trained on public product documentation doesn’t need the same protection as a model trained on regulated financial records or protected health data. Treat both the same and you end up either overprotecting the low-risk workload at real cost, or under-protecting the high-risk one because the whole sovereignty question got flattened into a single company-wide decision instead of many smaller ones.
Closing the opportunity gap drives University of Richmond alum’s work
Omar Ibrahim embraces opportunity wherever he finds it. At age 3, he moved with his family from the bustling metropolis of Alexandria, Egypt, to rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where his working-class parents hoped to find better opportunities for their two young sons. And they did. “My parents sacrificed so my brother and I could go to college,” said Ibrahim, who received a Pell Grant to attend University of Richmond.
University of Richmond senior researches higher education’s responses to racial justice demands and federal mandates
The murder of George Floyd in May 2020 set off a racial reckoning at colleges and universities that still was reverberating when Abigail Green matriculated at the University of Richmond in fall 2022. In the last 16 months, Green has watched many colleges and universities work to adapt to President Donald Trump’s January 2025 executive orders to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in higher education.
Commentary: How that 'big, beautiful bill' discards RVA’s children
On May 21, the House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which made deep cuts to the country’s social safety net. The list of programs that would be changed and/or reduced is steep and significant: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act and many others. If the bill passes the Senate, the impact would be enormous and fall mainly on low income families, caregivers and children.
Waymo meets Van Life
Tom Shields · Follow 3 min read · -- My current Van Life custom design “Well, I can lay in bed with only highway ahead, when I’m mobile” — The Who, Going Mobile Self-driving cars have been just a few years away for decades, but with Waymo and Tesla FSD and others, it does seem like we’re close. What’s interesting to me is how little imagination has been put into how this could change our relationship with places and transportation.
Commentary: When immigration officers show up at school, what next?
Outside the elementary school, 20 immigration agents with the logo of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are wearing ballistic and tactical gear and lining up in formation. Teachers and staff are watching from the windows while preventing the children in their classrooms from seeing what is unfolding outside. The school principal and administrative staff exchange nervous looks in the hallway near the front door while they clutch walkie-talkies in their hands.
The Arla Bovaer case highlights a new frontier for agrifoodtech: combatting misinformation
Tom Shields is a partner at AgFunder, the parent company of AgFunderNews. Innovation in food and agriculture has never been more critical. From addressing climate change to improving food security, new technologies are stepping up to solve pressing global challenges. But as recent events show, these advancements are facing a surprising and growing risk: the viral spread of misinformation.
Engage for Change
Since its inception in 1992, the Jepson School of Leadership Studies has been a pioneer of community-based learning at the University of Richmond. So, it was not surprising when in 2004, Douglas Hicks, then a Jepson School associate professor and now the president of Davidson College, became the founding director of the University’s Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE). Twenty years later, when the CCE hosted its annual Engage for Change Awards celebration on Sept.
Innovating the 'picks and shovels' of the greenhouse: Why AgFunder invested in robotics startup Neatleaf
Tom Shields is a partner at AgFunder, the parent company of AgFunderNews. AgFunder recently led a $4 million round for Neatleaf, a robotic cultivation management platform for indoor farming environments. More often than not, the simplest innovations are the best. When California-based Neatleaf reached out to AgFunder a couple years ago, we were struck by the company’s no-nonsense approach to autonomous ag robotics systems, which it’s is developing for greenhouse environments.
Make your data storage greener with data classification
In our digital age, data is the treasure of modern businesses. But not all data is equally valuable—after creation, much of it sits in the shadows, hardly touched. This data has a bigger impact on our environment than you might think. Thankfully, there’s a way to reduce this impact and make our data storage more eco-friendly. It’s estimated that about 70% of the data we create is never used again.
Three Decades of Change
On Jan. 10, Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton was unanimously voted as the chairman of the Henrico County Board of Supervisors. His colleague, Varina District Supervisor Tyrone E. Nelson, was sworn in as vice chairman. Having first been elected in 1995, this was Thornton’s sixth time wielding the gavel. Nelson, who was elected in 2011, has also served as chairman.
John Mercer Langston Paved the Way for Black U.S. Representatives, But Most People Don’t Know It
John Mercer Langston was born free in 1829 in Louisa County, Virginia. He was active in the abolishment movement, helping slaves gain freedom along the Underground Railroad. Langston also served as a minister to Haiti and president of the Virginia Normal and Collegiate School, what is today Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.
Option Value =/= Exercise Value
I don't know who needs to hear this right now but OPTION EXERCISE VALUE DOES NOT EQUAL OPTION VALUE. Do not multiply the number of options you have by the exercise price and assume that has anything to do with the option value either today or in the future. I've had several very smart people make this mistake recently - read on for why it matters.
By mapping Richmond's present, our future comes into focus
John V. Moeser, who passed away in October, was recently memorialized at two major events in the Richmond area. On April 10, Del. Betsy Carr, D-Richmond, and Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, D-Chesterfield, presented a joint resolution from the General Assembly to Moeser's family.
Schools have a moral (and legal) obligation to resist 'divisive concepts' ban
In September of 2020, President Donald Trump issued an executive order seeking to prevent government agencies, grantees and federal contractors from providing diversity, equity and inclusivity training. Trump's so-called "equity gag order" called such professional development "divisive" and "un-American." Trump's targeting of these trainings spawned similar copycat orders at the state level and seeped its way into our political discourse, including Virginia's 2021 gubernatorial race.
A Force for Change
Longtime professor and author John V. Moeser inspired legions of students and colleagues and helped Richmond carve a path toward racial justice. Moeser came to Richmond in 1971 to begin his teaching career at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he would become professor and chairman in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. In the 1970s and ’80s, he and several other colleagues helped form this prestigious department and created one of the most highly sought degrees at the university.

Tom Shields and Karen Kochel column: Diverse friendships: an unexpected benefit of controversial school rezoning
Suburban jurisdictions in the Richmond area, and across the United States, are becoming more racially and ethnically diverse, with large numbers of low-income populations. Due to increasing gentrification, urban areas are becoming more affluent and whiter. Overall, diversity of races and income is on the rise across major metropolitan areas. One might expect schools in these areas to reflect that increase in diversity of race and income.
Storytelling Leverage
Storytelling is possibly the single most important skill for CEOs and entrepreneurs. Sometimes it seems like storytelling is all you do. You tell stories to your investors to raise capital. You tell stories to your potential customers to assess demand and sell products. You tell stories to job candidates, to recruit them to join your team. You are probably the best storyteller your company has.
