Tetanus-driven biohybrid multijoint robots powered by muscle rings with enhanced contractile force

Abstract Biohybrid actuators using muscle rings have been limited to twitching movements and are unsuitable for sustained contractile force applications. In this study, we developed muscle rings capable of generating high contractile forces under tetanus stimulation. By enhancing the rigidity of pillar-shaped supports and increasing myoblast density through reduced extracellular matrix, we promoted the formation of dense, well-aligned muscle fiber bundles.

A Lancet editorial (Aug 18, 2018, p 531) highlighted the tragic killing of two students in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by a speeding bus, which was followed by country-wide protests by students demanding improved road safety. Although the protests reflect the severity of road traffic accidents in low-income and middle-income countries and weak enforcement of road safety in Bangladesh, we would like to specify one more aspect to make the picture clearer.
