1. Introduction Freshwater flow is a critical landscape process that influences the coastal marine ecosystems (Skreslet, 1986). River discharge stimulates phytoplankton and subsequently zooplankton assemblages by providing high nutrient concentrations (Schlacher et al., 2008). River plumes form biogeochemical hot spots in coastal seas worldwide and rank amongst the most productive regions of the world's oceans (Schlacher et al., 2008).
