Identification of a novel high-prevalence red blood cell antigen on junctional adhesion molecule-A defines a new blood group system

We show that p.Arg215 in junctional adhesion molecule-A (JAM-A) defines a new high-prevalence red cell antigen, JIMI (JAMA1). Homozygosity for c.644G>A in F11R, encoding p.Arg215Gln, results in lack of this antigen and immunized individuals can produce an antibody that binds both red cells and platelets. Our findings establish a new blood group system, JAMA (International Society of Blood Transfusion system no. 49).
