What policy work is needed in a VUCA world?
Global integration of manufacturing and trade has led most countries to have economic systems that can be disrupted by distant events and chain reactions. Climate change is starting to have unprecedented impacts. And, since COVID-19 emerged, we all know the speed with which a virus can spread, bringing illness, death, and massive social and economic disruption. A growing bandwagon of commentators declares our collective existence is subject to volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

Global report charts 'catastrophic' wildlife decline
The planet has suffered a catastrophic 73 per cent decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations in just 50 years, a new report says. WWF's latest Living Planet Report chronicles unsustainable declines that have occurred at breakneck speed relative to the earth's natural history. It charts how observed wildlife populations plunged over the five decades from 1970 - the year the Beatles split and Australia was gripped by protests against the Vietnam war.
Environment ministers summoned over bird flu threat
Environment ministers have been summoned to a special meeting on the looming bird flu threat as Australia asks the US and New Zealand for advice on vaccinating wildlife. Federal minister Tanya Plibersek has called the meeting for October 18, correspondence shows, after pressure from conservation groups and the ACT government.
Queensland Police join fights against fire ants with homeowners refusing eradication assistance set to be fined
Property owners who refuse to comply with mandatory treatment for fire ants could face the full force of the law, as police are called in. A lock-the-gate style campaign is underway by some Queensland landholders who don’t want baits spread on their properties. But the national eradication program says the super pest will only be defeated if all at-risk properties are treated with safe, low-dose chemical baits.
'Pitiful' funding for 'looming catastrophe' of bird flu
Oct 01 2024 The federal government is accused of throwing "small change" at the looming bird flu threat after its own Threatened Species Commissioner warned it could be Australia's worst ecological disaster. Fiona Fraser has painted a confronting picture about what the nation can expect when the virus that's devastated wildlife overseas arrives. End of native forest logging in NSW goes under microscope
A government-appointed panel is exploring an end to logging in NSW native forests within four years, with warring sides reading very different things into the proposal. The state government is under mounting pressure about the effect of its own logging business on nature. The historically divisive issue of taking slow-growing hardwoods from native forests has become even trickier as Labor works to deliver its promised Great Koala National Park.

Vision Splendid
The simple title “Year 12 Visual Arts 2024” does not prepare you for what you are about to absorb. I have had the pleasure over a number of years to attend St John’s College “Year 12 Visual Arts” Exhibition, and this year, as in past years, you are simply blown away by what is on display.
Unburnt wildlife refuge to be sacrificed for homes
The NSW government is under pressure over a housing development that will flatten a wildlife refuge spared in the Black Summer bushfires. Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has just approved a 153-home estate that will clear most of a mature forest on the NSW South Coast. The site at Manyana covers about 20 hectares and is documented habitat for grey-headed flying foxes, which are listed as vulnerable to extinction under federal laws.
Shareholders test Coles, Woolies over extinction threat
As Coles and Woolworths prepare for their annual general meetings, hundreds of their own shareholders have drawn battle lines in defence of an ancient species. Investors are imploring the retailers to stop selling salmon farmed in Tasmania's remote Macquarie Harbour. The shallow, narrow-necked waterway is the only place on earth where the Maugean skate exists but the species, a type of ray which dates back 60 million years, is teetering on the brink of extinction.
Coles rejects bid to help avoid ancient fish extinction
Coles has rejected a shareholder push to abandon the sale of salmon from a remote harbour where an ancient species is at risk of extinction. The supermarket giant is preparing for it's annual general meeting in November. Earlier this month, more than 120 shareholders proposed a resolution in defence of the ancient Maugean skate, which has been hurt by the effects of salmon farming in Tasmania's Macquarie Harbour.
Farming fuels NSW land clearing crisis: data
Land clearing that is driving NSW's nature crisis is charging ahead at an alarming rate with agriculture largely to blame, new government data shows. An area more than 160 times the size of Sydney's CBD was cleared in 2022, according to the latest study that tracks tree and land cover losses across the state. Federal minister's lack of control on logging 'absurd'
The federal environment minister is under pressure to immediately claw back control over state-based logging activities that harm native forests. Federal independents say Tanya Plibersek has an absurd lack of authority over how logging is affecting the habitats of species she’s promised to save from extinction. They include the koala and the greater glider, both of which are protected under federal environment laws.

Nation failing to pull species back from brink: report
At 88, Peter Pigott reckons he's spent $2 million keeping Australia's largest population of Parma wallabies alive - but he hasn't seen a cent from the federal government. His 53-year crusade to save a marsupial once thought extinct is a perfect case study of what's wrong with the country's efforts to save its most imperilled plants and animals.
