June 11, 2026, 7:45 a.m. PT The Oregon Department of Agriculture has released new guidance to protect animals after the country’s first case of New World screwworm, a parasitic fly that infects animals, including pets and wildlife, and threatens humans. On June 3, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the detection of New World screwworm in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. Oregon agriculture officials responded immediately, State Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Scholz said.
