Opinion | Australia's broken employment services system | Newcastle Herald | Newcastle, NSW
"It's harsh but true to say that Australia no longer has an effective coherent national employment services system." Black Friday Offers Subscribe today for the news that matters or signup to continue reading All articles from our website & app The digital version of Today's Paper Crosswords, Sudoku and Trivia "We have an inefficient outsourced fragmented social security compliance management system that sometimes gets someone a job against all odds." So began the report of the parliamentary...
We can’t fix what we don’t track. That’s why Australia needs an official poverty measure
Following last month’s economic reform roundtable, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said all attendees agreed “higher living standards is the holy grail, and a more productive economy is how we deliver it”. This signalled the government’s understanding that leaving no one behind can unlock greater prosperity and productivity for everyone. But for all the discussion about improving living standards, there was little explicit mention of poverty.
Will we take opportunity to change early childhood strategy for good?
As our early years framework stands right now, too many children miss out on the support and early learning they need to thrive. One in five children start school facing developmental vulnerability, and that figure is even higher for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Over the next year, we have a rare opportunity to redefine Australia's approach to early childhood development at a national level.
Tackling the cost-of-living crisis one savings goal at a time
Posted on 19 Sep 2023 By Travers McLeod For 20 years the Brotherhood of St Laurence Saver Plus program has helped financially disadvantaged Victorians develop lifelong savings habits. Now it’s going national, says BSL executive director Travers McLeod. At the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL), we have 2,500 staff and volunteers working with tens of thousands of low-income households each year.
We need a “red team” for COVID-19 | Travers McLeod
In his foreword to Australia’s latest Health Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza last August, home affairs minister Peter Dutton acknowledged the inevitability of an influenza pandemic with the “potential to cause high levels of disease and death and disrupt our community socially and economically.” A few months later, in January, the World Economic Forum’s annual Global Risks Report contained a sentence that should have put most countries into a cold sweat: “no country is fully prepared...
Legal action on climate is what we all want to avoid - CPD CEO Travers McLeod in the AFR
Efforts to understand climate risk within companies and across the economy are not about managing climate through the legal system, usurping the role of government, or forcing companies to go it alone on saving the planet. Quite the opposite. They are about making companies, investors, governments and communities aware of the risks and opportunities and better equipped to respond to them.
On a mission to save democracy
Last week, former prime minister John Howard played down the Liberal Party’s hammering in the Victorian election by describing the state as “the Massachusetts of Australia.” In the American parlance, Massachusetts is a deep Democrat blue. It was the only state not to vote for Richard Nixon in his landslide re-election victory in 1972 (a fact that, with the benefit of hindsight, might reflect uniquely good judgement).
Relaxing airstrike rules is a recipe for disaster
Calls to relax targeting rules for airstrikes against Islamic State ignore the lessons of our recent past and the fact that a battle of ideas, not body counts, will determine this war, writes Travers McLeod. Tony Abbott has argued Australia and her allies should relax targeting rules for airstrikes to destroy the Islamic State. At best, he is ignorant of the lessons of the military campaigns waged in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001.
Company directors can be held legally liable for ignoring the risks from climate change
Company directors who don’t properly consider climate related risks could be liable for breaching their duty of due care and diligence, a new legal opinion has found. Although the alarm for business leaders has been sounding for some time, the release of the opinion by senior barristers and leading solicitors confirms the potential liability for Australian company directors. Australian companies are particularly exposed to the physical, transition and liability risks posed by climate change.
How the Asia-Pacific can lead the way on migrants and refugees
September has seen a surge of international summits. First came the G20 in Hangzhou, then ASEAN and the East Asia Summit in Vientiane, plus the Pacific Islands Forum in Pohnpei. And, on consecutive days this week, the United Nations in New York hosted a summit on refugees and migrants, followed by US President Barack Obama’s special leaders’ summit on refugees.
The Bali Process can do a lot more to respond to forced migration in our region
The Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime will hold a full ministerial meeting in Bali this Wednesday. The meeting will bring together ministers from 45 member countries for the first time in three years. The global context for the meeting is the current levels of displacement. Sixty million people are displaced – the highest level since the second world war. And governments around the world are struggling to respond effectively.
We Need To Change Our Present For The Future
'Tis the season to be jolly, as they say. Or, excited, as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull repeats on cue, like a Santa Claus 'Ho-Ho-Hoing' through the local shops. His change of tone since ending Tony Abbott's Prime Ministerial reign is a relief. Turnbull's optimism is a breath of fresh air after years of Abbott's negative focus on what the future won't include, as opposed to what it might. Converting this excitement into gifted policy is a greater challenge.
