Introduction As a result of decreased fertility and improved survival, the population is aging rapidly across the world (United Nations 2017). The global population aged ≥60y has increased from 382 million in 1980 to 962 million in 2017 and is predicted to double again by 2050, reaching nearly 2.1 billion (United Nations 2017). With this rapid demographic shift, it is important to better understand the determinants of the biological aging process and how to achieve healthy aging (WHO 2015).
