Chiefs-Rams was great fun, but it’s bad football
Kansas City and Los Angeles put on a great offensive show on Monday Night Football, but this is not what the NFL game is supposed to be I’m not Walt Kowalski. I’m not telling you to get off my lawn, or, in this case, my turf. The Monday night game between Kansas City and the Los Angeles Rams was fun. I LOVED the entertainment factor. I LOVED the excitement. I LOVED the playmaking. It just wasn’t good football by NFL standards. This was Big 12 football. That’s not an insult. I live in Big 12 country.
The Titans’ latest win may have been the most important game Mariota has ever played
Monday night might have been the most important game Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota has ever played. I know this might sound like hyperbole, but let’s take a deep dive into why it’s not. After a nice first two years of his career, things have been trending downward for the former second overall pick in the 2015 draft. He has been inconsistent over the past two seasons and hasn’t shown the ability to adapt his game to the NFL style of play.
When evaluating QBs, pay attention to the things you can’t quantify
Every year I see hundreds of talented quarterbacks competing to get into the Elite 11 grassroots QB camp and competition, and every year there are kids who jump out because of their stature and talent. Once in a while I feel a rare presence that lets me know there is a future superstar on the field. That’s what I felt when Deshaun Watson was at an Elite 11 regional at Buford High School in Georgia in 2013. Watson was highly touted after a rock star sophomore and junior season.
What quarterbacks and coaches can learn from Drew Brees’ path to greatness
Drew Brees should be an inspiration to all young quarterbacks and a lesson to all coaches to not put limits on athletes with great competitive temperaments and true grit. Young quarterbacks can look to Brees and not let anyone tell them what they won’t become. Brees guided Westlake High School in Austin, Texas to a state championship as a senior but received just two college scholarship offers, from Purdue and Kentucky.
When it comes to college quarterbacks, sometimes it’s more about demand than performance
It was a great weekend for college quarterbacks, even though they had absolutely nothing to do with it. Of the quarterbacks who’re considered top prospects for the 2019 NFL draft, only Oregon’s Justin Herbert played well. I went to bed Saturday night thinking what a tough week it had been for West Virginia’s Will Grier, Missouri’s Drew Lock and Penn State’s Trace McSorley. But 24 hours later I was thinking it hadn’t been so tough. That’s because Blake Bortles is playing poorly for the Jaguars again.
Advice on Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, struggling QBs
Every week during the NFL season, Matthew Berry will be engaging in a discussion with an NFL expert on topics that will provide valuable insights for fantasy owners. For this pre-Week 8 edition, Berry and ESPN NFL analyst Trent Dilfer look at fantasy QBs who have underperformed compared to preseason expectations. Plus, they look at fallout from the Percy Harvin deal and reflect on their early-season fantasy trade involving Cordarrelle Patterson and Rob Gronkowski.
Adjusting quarterback win-loss records, part I
Last summer I wrote a post that rated field goal kickers according to their accuracy compared to league average. And I also adjusted each kicker's field goal percentage to account for the distance of his attempts. If one kicker attempted a bunch of chippies while another was kicking a lot more long ones, then we should take that into account when comparing their percentages. This is highly non-controversial. Obvious even. So we're going to do it again.
