Miami Springs Senior High School senior Leonardo Rios sees the world a little differently, literally. In middle school, Rios suffered a torn retina that left him with 20/260 vision in one eye, a condition he describes as a block or wall in the center of his sight. But inside the art classroom, that wall never stopped him. That classroom and its teacher made a difference that changed his world.

Santo Dulce! Churros and Ice Cream is marking the FIFA World Cup with Churros Mundiales, a limited-time sampler platter of stuffed churros, served at The Doral Yard in Miami-Dade and at Smorgasburg South Florida in Fort Lauderdale from June 11 through July 19. Guests can build a tasting flight two ways: El Pasaporte, three flavors with vanilla ice cream, or La Copa, with all six. Every churro is made fresh to order.

South Florida’s warm, wet climate makes Miami-Dade County one of the most mosquito-prone regions in the country. Peak season runs from April through October, but the county has one of the nation’s most active mosquito control programs, and Pinecrest residents are a critical part of it.
