Pather Panchali—arguably the best-known novel in the Bengali language—was written by my grandfather Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay exactly a century ago. Since then, it has proved to be a machine in perpetual motion: excitement around it remains undiminished and critical interpretations abound. I had been curious about the conjuring that can make one piece of literature persist while many others fade away.
