Introduction Occasionally, scientists are struck by discoveries to such extent that they express their enthusiasm explicitly, for example by choosing a name for a new species that translates as ‘very wonderful’. This was most likely the case when British biologist Sladen (1878, 1879) introduced the species name permira for an odd brittle star with a bizarre, limpet-like body shape unseen in any other ophiuroid.
