1 Introduction Transnational families are on the rise in North America. Transnational families are a growing phenomenon referring to families who live apart but still feel a ‘sense of collective welfare, unity, and familyhood across national borders’ (Fesenmyer 2014). Transnational families form after an individual migrates from their home country, leaving immediate or extended family members behind in their original country (Fesenmyer 2014).
