UNC got three encouraging performances in its exhibition game at Memphis from the players that it needs to see take big steps forward this season. VIP North Carolina’s exhibition victory over Memphis last week had the characteristics that you might expect to see from an early preseason tuneup. The newcomers were still getting up to speed, the freshmen looked like freshmen, and there were several missed boxouts and sloppy turnovers that the team will clean up in practice.
Film Room: Scheming for Cadeau
Hubert Davis and his staff will need to find ways to scheme around defenses sagging off his starting point guard. VIP It goes without saying, but perimeter shooting is not one of Elliot Cadeau's strengths on the offensive end right now. According to Synergy Sports, the freshman point guard is shooting 22.1 percent on jump shots this season, scoring 0.55 points per shot attempt. That mark ranks in the seventh percentile nationally.

VIP North Carolina got off to a strong start in last week's ACC Tournament, picking up a dominant 92-67 win over Florida State and a gutsy 72-65 win over Pittsburgh to get one step closer to capturing the program's first conference tournament title since 2016.
Film Room: Cormac Ryan Catching Fire
Taking a closer look at the plays that got the Tar Heel guard his his six three-pointers in the win at Duke. VIP When North Carolina and Duke square off, there always seems to be a player that steps up and changes the tide of a game. In the two programs' first meeting one month ago, that player was Harrison Ingram, who knocked down five three-pointers and recorded a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double in a Carolina victory at the Smith Center.
Film Room: Exceptional Ball Movement
The Tar Heel offense is trending in a positive direction ahead of one of its biggest offensive challenges of the season. VIP North Carolina had quite the 'get right' game in its win over Virginia Tech last weekend, taking down the Hokies 96-81 behind a well-rounded offensive attack. UNC shot 51.5 percent from the field, handed out 18 assists on 35 made baskets, and put together one of its better offensive showings of the season.
Film Room: Attacking UNC’s Pick-and-Roll Defense
Syracuse's ball-handlers racked up 24 points out of the pick-and-roll, scoring at a blistering 1.412 points per possession VIP North Carolina picked up its third loss in five games on Tuesday night, falling to Syracuse 86-79 in a contest that saw the Orange scorch the nets on the offensive end. From a results standpoint, this was by far Carolina's worst defensive performance of the season.
Film Room: Punishing Duke’s Defense
North Carolina put together one of its most complete offensive showings of the season in its 93-84 win over arch-rival Duke on Saturday night. The Tar Heels controlled the game throughout the 40-minute contest by playing at their pace, sharing the basketball (18 assists to five turnovers), and attacking the holes in the Blue Devil defense thanks to smart game planning from the coaching staff and sharp execution from the players. It all started with Armando Bacot.
Film Room: Picking on Drop Coverage
Wake Forest had no answers for North Carolina's pick-and-roll attack throughout the Tar Heels 85-64 dismantling of the Demon Deacons on Monday night, a consequence of Steve Forbes' defensive scheme failing to keep up with the backcourt tandem of RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau. The Deacons utilize deep drop coverage against pick-and-rolls in order to protect the basket and dare opposing ball-handlers to shoot from the mid-range.
Film Room: Jae’Lyn Withers’ Off-Ball Activity
UNC outscored Louisville by 24 points whenever Withers was on the court. VIP North Carolina's 86-70 win over Louisville on Wednesday night was a fitting occasion for Jae'Lyn Withers to have his best performance as a Tar Heel. The transfer forward picked up a pair of season-highs against his former team, scoring 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting (5-of-7 FT) to go along with 10 rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

Let's walk through some of the plays that Hubert Davis ran down the stretch. VIP North Carolina once again leaned on its defense to beat NC State 67-54 and pick up its third straight win on the road, but Hubert Davis' offensive strategy and play calling later in the game helped the Tar Heels go on a 15-2 spurt to run away with the victory. In today's film room, let's walk through some of the plays that Hubert Davis ran down the stretch.
Film Room: The Washington-Bacot Frontcourt
North Carolina cruised to a 105-60 win over Charleston Southern last week in its last non-conference bout of the season, a matchup that was never in doubt. Typically, games against low majors are meant for getting in a rhythm before the start of conference play, giving the bench players additional playing time, and experimenting with different lineup combinations.

The Tar Heels played some of their best defense of the season in the win over Oklahoma. VIP Following No. 11 North Carolina's 81-69 win over No. 7 Oklahoma, coach Hubert Davis had high praise for his team's performance on the defensive end. "One of the things that Oklahoma is great at is getting consistent points in the paint... so it was a huge emphasis for us when they ran their action, which was mostly ball screens, to protect the paint," Davis said.

The senior guard is averaging 26.7 points (45.0 FG%, 38.0 3P%, 95.6 FT%), 4.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 3.2 three-pointers over his last six games and has scored over 20 points in each contest, including UNC's 87-83 loss to Kentucky in the CBS Sports Classic on Saturday night.

VIP North Carolina's loss to UConn earlier this week made one thing abundantly clear: defending the reigning national champions is no small task. Dan Hurley's Huskies screen you to death and are always on the move, demanding opponents to play mistake-free defense until the final buzzer; if there is the tiniest miscommunication or error from the defense, they will find it and attack it.
Film Room: UNC’s Full-Court Press vs FSU
By pressing, the Tar Heels outscored the Seminoles 43-22, forcing seven turnovers. Days removed from one of the program's best offensive showings in a few years, North Carolina found itself at risk of dropping its ACC opener on its home floor against Florida State, trailing the Seminoles 48-35 with 15:34 left in the game. The Tar Heels were struggling to establish rhythm on the offensive end and any semblance of resistance on defense.

Ingram's performances were perhaps the biggest UNC storyline from the preseason tournament. VIP North Carolina finished in third place at last week’s Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, leaving the Bahamas with wins over Northern Iowa and Arkansas, and an overtime loss to Villanova. There's plenty worth discussing from the three-day event, but one storyline that arguably stands out the most is Harrison Ingram’s performance.

It's been a promising early-season stretch for the sophomore big man. VIP North Carolina made quick work of UC Riverside to complete its early-season homestand on Friday night, defeating the Highlanders 77-52 behind a strong defensive showing on a night where shots weren't consistently falling.
Film Room: UNC’s Three-Point Defense Against Lehigh
While there were a few interesting statistical story lines from North Carolina's 90-68 victory over Lehigh on Sunday afternoon — RJ Davis and Armando Bacot combining for 44 points, Bacot continuing his climb up the Carolina record books, and the team getting meaningful contributions from the bench — the one that arguably stands out the most is on the defensive end. In particular, Lehigh’s success from beyond the arc.
Film Room: Seth Trimble’s Second-Half Spark
After leading by double digits in the first half, North Carolina was leading 53-50 with just under 14 minutes to go in its Sunday afternoon matinee against Lehigh. But just as it seemed like there could be a close finish, the 19th-ranked Tar Heels outscored the Mountain Hawks 37-18 the rest of the way, cruising to a 90-68 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season. Unlike the past two seasons, UNC didn’t have to rely solely on its starters to pull away with the win.
