Rideshare competition expands as Uber arrives in Greater Sudbury

Effective Aug. 24, Greater Sudburians can fire up an Uber app and request a ride. The service is also now available through a wide swath of northeastern Ontario. The company joins other rideshare companies already operating in Greater Sudbury, including URide, Y Drive and SettleInn DriveU, which was locally developed and tailored for newcomers. Uber’s expansion between Gravenhurst and Cochrane, including Greater Sudbury, was announced last month.

Local students receive 1,200 backpacks loaded with school supplies

This year’s third annual Mayor Paul Lefebvre Backpack Campaign is seeing to it that 1,200 backpacks loaded with school supplies are given to local families in need. City Social and Housing Services staff at the City staff will connect with local families to divvy out the backpacks in time for a new school year to begin.

‘Lame duck’ city council partially sidelined for election season

Greater Sudbury city council members are lame ducks. This isn’t a slight against the mayor and 12 city council members, but a reflection of the nomination period closing last week, sparking the beginning of election season. As such, Greater Sudbury city council members have been partially sidelined until the new city council’s term begins on Nov. 15. (For some municipalities, powers return after the Oct. 26 civic election, but this timeline depends on how many members retain their seats.
