Teachers, families protest School District 8 plan to replace Aboriginal Education staff - Nelson Star
Families and teachers are opposing a sweeping change to Indigenous education in School District 8 that would replace teachers with support workers ahead of the fall semester. The district plans to reassign teachers currently working in the Aboriginal Education program in elementary and middle schools. Those teachers would be placed into regular classroom roles, while the district will hire education assistants called Indigenous support workers.

Intercultural Kootenays has received a $5,000 grant from the Ministry of Attorney General for its Discrimination Reporting Tool. After years in the works, construction begins on new Nelson Civic Theatre - Nelson Star
The curtain is slowly rising on the new Nelson Civic Theatre. The theatre hosted a groundbreaking ceremony April 29 to mark the long-awaited start of construction on a renovation that will expand the facility to three screens. Plans for three screens have been in the works since the Civic Theatre reopened in 2013 after a two-year hiatus, but the project was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the two-year closure of the Civic Centre for roof renovations, and rising costs.
B.C. ministry, former project manager sued for unpaid Kootenay Lake ferry work - Salmon Arm Observer
A second lawsuit related to the long-delayed Kootenay Lake ferry has been launched. Albion Marine Solutions, based in Coquitlam, B.C., is suing the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure as well as former project manager Western Pacific Marine for unpaid work on the new inland ferry currently being constructed at a temporary dry dock in Nelson. The lawsuit, filed April 23 in B.C. Supreme Court, alleges Albion is owed $515,796.64 for work completed between July 11 to Sept. 1, 2025.
