1 Introduction European colonization radically transformed the landscapes of eastern North America, causing vegetation change greater than any during the previous millennium (Fuller et al. 1998; Schulte et al. 2007) and comparable in magnitude to the shifts associated with the massive climate change of the Pleistocene–Holocene transition (Williams, Shuman, and Webb 2001). This vegetation change stands out against the ongoing shifts due to post-glacial migration and Native American land use.
