As many of you know, I dip in and out of yachting. I still work with incredible private clients, relationships so close I can’t share them online. But there are also big gaps when I’m not on board. And that’s when I’ve been forced to face the transition: stepping from sea life to land life, from adrenaline to stillness. At the age many in yachting consider “young”, I’ve already felt “too old” to stay forever. The pull to begin family life and ground myself is real.

With all my years of experience in the superyacht industry, I’ll be honest, I was once green too. We’ve all been there. New to yachting, full of excitement, but not always aware of the little things that make or break you as a crew member. This industry has a language and etiquette all of its own. Some rules are written down in manuals, but the ones that really matter? The unspoken rules you only learn by messing up, getting a raised eyebrow from the chief stew, or a quiet word from a captain.

Recently, as many of you saw on my social media, I was put in a dangerous situation on a yacht. I want to share my story so you can learn from my mistakes — and so we can all keep the crew safe. After a long break from yachting, I was eager to return. My guard was down. A friend passed me a lead for a chef job through WhatsApp. The “agency” turned out to be a management company, not a crew agent — already a red flag.
