Introduction Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is the fourth most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer-associated mortality in sub-Saharan Africa [1]. The incidence is predicted to increase significantly over the next decade, particularly in low- and middle-income countries [2]. Earlier work has suggested that a significant proportion of CRC in sub-Saharan Africa has a clinicopathological phenotype which differs from what is seen in developed countries [3-9].
