I’m Devin Giordano, a journalist and essayist from New York, and the co-founder of You Are Not Alone (YANA), a nonprofit born inside Eastern NY Correctional Facility. YANA is committed to shifting the culture of how men treat women by confronting violence, teaching respect, and supporting healing—one man, one boy at a time. Survivors’ Justice Needs More Than Just Laws

Early this year, New Jersey became the sixth state to enact a law that lets courts consider past history of abuse as a mitigating factor in sentencing for survivors of domestic violence. Similar laws have passed in New York, Illinois, California, Oklahoma, and Georgia over the past seven years. A bill is pending in Massachusetts, and the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council has published its own version of this law for potential use by other states.

In the prison system, time is abstract yet omnipresent. It is tracked obsessively in paperwork, debated over in court hearings, and measured in exacting increments intended to offer a sense of clarity. Yet among the men serving it at my facility, time is rarely spoken of directly. Not because it is unimportant, but because naming it plainly would require confronting how much has already been taken, and how little control remains over what is left. Instead, time is often softened through language.
