Interview

How is social media changing news?

It accelerates distribution and gives readers direct access to experts and primary sources, but it also makes verification more important. Speed should not replace source-checking, context, or a clear distinction between evidence and commentary.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To me, credible journalism means getting the facts and source material right, separating evidence from assumption, and explaining complex issues clearly enough that readers can understand what is known, what is uncertain, and why it matters.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By email, with a concise description of the reporting angle, the specific question, the outlet, and the deadline. Written requests work best.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

The core tools are the source records themselves: immigration documents, banking, tax, corporate, payroll and business records, supported by structured document review and standard collaboration tools. The specific software matters less than maintaining a clear evidence trail and version control.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Rather than rank my published work, the CPA Practice Advisor piece on record preservation and source of funds best illustrates my current public work: connecting professional financial records with the immigration evidence they may later need to support.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

When covering technical subjects, start with the primary source, separate facts from interpretation, and ask narrowly framed questions. Clear sourcing and careful qualification usually matter more than sounding certain.

When's the best time to pitch you?

No specific time preference. Email is best, and concise written requests on Canadian immigration, business immigration, source-of-funds evidence, newcomer finance, or related financial-evidence issues are preferred.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I do not rank individual pitches. The most useful pitches are concise, identify the reporting angle and deadline, and ask a specific question that can be answered from evidence or a clearly defined professional perspective.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

For me, it means explaining complex subjects accurately, using verifiable evidence, and being clear about the difference between law, policy, professional judgment and opinion. The goal is to help readers understand the issue without overstating what the evidence supports.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

A common misconception is that immigration evidence is mostly about filling forms correctly. In complex files, the harder issue is often whether the underlying records tell one consistent, traceable story across banking, tax, corporate, payroll and immigration documents.
