1 Introduction Vector-sum phase shifters (VSPSs) are key building blocks in phased-array transmitters and receivers, where electronic beam steering is obtained by imposing controlled phase offsets among the antenna elements [1-4]. In an active VSPS, the required RF phase is synthesized by weighting and adding in-phase and quadrature components, so that phase control is implemented through gain programming rather than through cascaded switched delay or transmission-line sections [2, 4].

Abstract : This paper presents the design of a new phase shifter to be used in a receiver of active antenna array operating in the range from 17 GHz to 22 GHz. Beamforming is achieved by controlling the phase of the signal in each radiant element. In this context, the phase shift is obtained by the combination of a quadrature signal generator (QSG) and a variable gain amplifier (VGA).
