The ubiquitous presence of microplastics in the environment (1) and their associated impacts on the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems (2) and the human health (3) underscore the importance of the continued efforts towards the development of effective microplastic detection and characterization methods.

The identification of microparticles in a given sample is an important problem for screening of consumer products, drugs, and environmental samples. Indeed, for environmental screening, the presence of microplastics in water samples has increasingly been seen as an emerging, critical problem. Approaches for microplastic identification currently involve time-consuming and challenging operations.
