South Asia Correspondent at @AFP news agency

Uzmi Athar’s Biography

I am a journalist currently working as a South Asia correspondent with Agence France-Presse (AFP). My work focuses on breaking news, investigative reporting, and long-form storytelling, with particular attention to India’s social and developmental issues, alongside health, politics, policy, and environmental beats. I strive to tell stories that centre affected communities and explain how policies and decisions shape everyday lives.

Over the years, my reporting has been recognised with a few honours, including the Cushrow Irani Prize for Environmental Reporting (2024), the International Prize of the Ulrich Wickert Award for Children’s Rights (2024) by Plan International, and the Ricardo Ortega Memorial Prize – Bronze Medal (2021) from the United Nations Correspondents Association.

I have also had the opportunity to be part of fellowships such as the Oxford Climate Journalism Network Fellowship (2024), the Climate Change Media Partnership Reporting Fellowship for COP28 (2023) by the Earth Journalism Network, and the India Climate Journalism Program (2023) by the Associated Press and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security. These experiences have helped deepen my understanding of climate, development, and governance issues across South Asia.

As a self-starter, I am particularly drawn to under-reported stories, and I have been fortunate that some of my reporting has contributed to legislative changes, policy reforms, and, at times, interventions by the Supreme Court.
