There aren’t many spaces for young people who are interested in art,” says Angela Brayham, program lead for Rainmakers Youth Arts Councilin St. Catharines, Ontario. Launched in 2025 through the Rodman Art Institute of Niagara, where Brayham is gallery director, Rainmakers seeks to fill that gap and give creative young people ages 14 to 29 a place to gather and support one another as they explore the arts.

In February 2025, I received an invitation to a group funeral for my mother and 72 deceased strangers. As I scanned the details, my head felt light. I’d pushed to the back of my mind the idea that Mum was still out there having a final earthly experience, away from those of us who knew and loved her.

Repairing the World

I GREW UP IN THE 1980s in a house full of aging appliances and hand-me-down furniture, clothing and toys. Whether it was a debris-spewing vacuum or a teddy bear who’d lost an eye, if my parents couldn’t fix something themselves, they took it to a specialty shop. My mother taught me how to sew on buttons, and my science teacher, how to wire a plug. Today, it’s often cheaper to replace than repair an appliance, and easier to click “Buy Now” than to pick up a needle and thread.
